City of Aiken to Hold Drop-In Information Session on Downtown Traffic and Pedestrian Updates

Aiken, SC – The City of Aiken will host a drop-in information session about the upcoming traffic, parking, and pedestrian changes that will occur because of construction related to Oliver Hospitality’s renovation and construction project at the site of the former Hotel Aiken and adjacent parcels in downtown Aiken.

The drop-in session will be from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. in the first floor lobby of the Frederick B. Cavanaugh, Jr. Municipal Building, 111 Chesterfield Street, South on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. For those unable to attend in person, information will be shared on the City’s website: https://www.cityofaikensc.gov/government/current-projects/

2026-08-26 The President of the United States has issued a proclamation and directive to display the flag of the United States at half-staff until sunset on September 1, 2026, as a mark of respect for the memory of Dolly Parton. Accordingly, the Governor directs that the flags atop the State Capitol be flown at half-staff until sunset on September 1, 2026, and the Governor requests that the flags over state buildings and buildings of the political subdivisions of this State similarly be flown at half-staff for this purpose.

Dougherty Road Traffic Notice

The City of Aiken Engineering & Utilities Department will be making a water line repair near 921 Dougherty Road on Thursday, August 27, beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Dougherty Road will be closed to through traffic in the work area while the repair is completed. A detour will be in place for residents and motorists traveling through the area.

Westbound traffic will be diverted to Mears Street, then Murrah Drive, and Tyler Street before returning to Dougherty Road. Eastbound traffic will follow the same detour route in reverse.

The City anticipates the closure will last only a few hours. However, the roadway will be fully reopened no later than 6:00 a.m. Friday, August 28.

Drivers are asked to use caution in the area, follow posted detour signs, and allow additional travel time.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while City crews complete this necessary repair.

Traffic Safety Advisory

The Aiken Department of Public Safety is issuing a traffic safety advisory regarding a new traffic control change implemented by the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

A new three-way stop has been installed at the intersection of Powderhouse Road and South Boundary Avenue. Traffic traveling east and west on South Boundary Avenue is now required to stop at the Powderhouse Road intersection.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution, remain alert to the new traffic pattern, and watch for posted signs when traveling through the area

On August 17, 2026, the City of Aiken held its inaugural Mayor’s Citizens of Excellence Awards ceremony, recognizing local students and three individuals who have left a lasting impact on the City of Aiken. Mayor Teddy Milner opened the ceremony by sharing updates on major capital projects such as the Shaws Creek Water Treatment Plant and Tribute Parkway, as well as the status of downtown redevelopment projects, underscoring the city’s commitment to excellence and progress.
