Welcome to the official Savannah River Operations Office (DOE-SR) page. Department of Energy (DOE) organization that serves as the landlord for site resources and is responsible for overseeing the work performed by the Savannah River Site’s (SRS) contractors. SRS is a key DOE industrial complex dedicated to; environmental cleanup, nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship, and nuclear materia

ls disposition, in support of the nation's nuclear non-proliferation efforts. The site also develops and deploys technologies to support radiological and chemical cleanup activities following approximately 50 years of producing materials used for nuclear weapons, primarily plutonium and tritium. The site’s center is approximately 15 miles south of Aiken, South Carolina and 25 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia...the two closest population centers. The site covers more than 310 square miles. SRS is responsible for oversight of the DOE's Environmental Management operations under the Office of Environmental Management (EM). The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) also manages the Savannah River Field Office and the Office of Nonproliferation that perform National Security missions at SRS as tenant organizations.

In May, the Savannah River Site Fire Department (SRSFD) showcased its dedication to emergency preparedness at the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Active Assailant Response workshop at the Constellis Training Facility in Moyock, North Carolina. Competing alongside top teams from across the NNSA Enterprise, SRSFD earned first place in the Fire Department category. Their outstanding teamwork and expertise are helping set new standards for safety and collaboration. Another legacy waste tank at the Savannah River Site (SRS) has reached a major cleanup milestone! Tank 14 is the eighth waste tank to achieve Preliminary Cease Waste Removal in under two years – way ahead of schedule!

U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management Assistant Secretary Tim Walsh recognized the achievement during his recent visit to SRS with the placement of a commemorative medallion. Walsh commended the team’s dedication, innovation, and efforts in safely reducing environmental risks in South Carolina.

Savannah River Mission Completion continues to deliver results that positively impact our environment for generations.

The National Nuclear Security Administration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers marked the start of construction for a new procurement warehouse supporting the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility (SRPPF) project at the Savannah River Site. The partnership is advancing construction of the support facility for the NNSA’s pit production mission.
