Aiken County Veterans - Did You Know?

Our office is open! We have implemented some changes to better protect the health of our veterans, visitors and staff due to COVID 19.

1) Appointments Only - please call us at (803) 642-1545 to schedule an appointment. If you "drop by" our office, we will schedule an appointment for you. Appointments can be in-person office or virtual (by phone/email/video conference) depending on the veteran's preference.

2) We are also providing checklists to assist you, so when you come to your appointment you will be prepared and we can focus on helping you, instead of missing items pertinent to your case that could cause delays and/or require additional meetings.

3) For in-person office appointments, we are limiting them to one hour, to minimize exposure risk.

4) During each in-person office appointment, staff will be wearing masks. We ask veterans to also bring/wear a mask - if you do not have one, please ask and our staff can provide one to you.

5) After any in-person appointments, we disinfect our offices to minimize the chance of contagions being spread.

Please help US - help YOU, by following the protocols above

THANK YOU VETERANS! STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!

Veterans with Claims - Did You Know?
Due to COVID 19, the VA suspended conducting compensation & pension (C&P) exams in support of Veteran's claims, and began conducting "tele-health" using phone/smartphone/tablet/laptop/home computers.
On Thursday, May 28th the VA announced it will resume c&p exams in the following limited areas:

White River Junction, Vt.
Syracuse, N.Y.
Erie, Penn.
Huntington, W. Va.
Danville, Va.
Charleston, S.C.
West Palm Beach, Fla.
Johnson City, Tenn.
Cleveland, Ohio
Tomah, Wis.
Shorewood Hills, Wis.
Kansas City, Mo.
Little Rock, Ark.
San Antonio, Texas
Fort Harrison, Mont.
Seattle, Wash.
Boise, Idaho
Las Vegas, Nev.
Tucson, Ariz.
Fargo, N.D.

Veterans outside of these service areas will continue to be served through tele-health appointments or the acceptable clinical evidence process, which includes a review of existing medical records to provide information needed to complete the claim, whenever possible.

Veterans within resumed service areas who do not yet feel comfortable receiving in-person exams may opt to schedule their exam for a later date without impact to their disability claim. No final action will be taken on a claim while a required in-person exam is pending.

Aiken parade committee, Shellhouse teaming up to pay tribute to Memorial Day's fallen heroes

Veterans - Did You Know?
Each year, the City of Aiken has a Memorial Day Parade to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of this great nation. Unfortunately, due to the COVID 19 response, we have had to CANCEL this year's parade.

However, our Memorial Day Committee did explore other options, because Aiken is known for honoring its veterans every day and, especially on Memorial Day, remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We wanted to continue that longstanding tradition of remembrance in some way – but only if it could be done safely.

Therefore, on Saturday, May 23rd starting at 11am, Mr. Robert Shellhouse of Shellhouse Funeral Home, has been gracious enough to conduct his 1800's era caisson with a riderless horse along the parade route normally used, from the Train Depot on Park Avenue traveling west to Laurens street, where he will turn right on Laurens and end near Barnwell street.

The tribute to our fallen military will being at 11am, and we ask that everyone remember them with a moment of silence at 11am.

Please note - this is NOT a parade. If you are downtown during this event, please continue to adhere to the COVID 19 preventative health measures already in place.

Even though the 2020 edition of the Aiken Memorial Day Parade has been canceled because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, there still will be a tribute in the city's downtown

Veterans - Info from the VA

WASHINGTON - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced, April 3, a number of actions to provide Veterans with financial, benefits and claims help amid VA's COVID-19 response.

“As all Americans come together to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, we want Veterans to be focused on their health and safety,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “That’s why we’re taking action to give those with pending debts, claims and appeals greater flexibility during these challenging times.”

The financial relief actions include the following until further notice:

• Suspending all actions on Veteran debts under the jurisdiction of the Treasury Department.

• Suspending collection action or extending repayment terms on preexisting VA debts, as the Veteran prefers.

For benefit debts, Veterans can contact the VA Debt Management Center at 1-800-827-0648 to make arrangements.

For health care debts, Veterans can contact the Health Resource Center at 1-888-827-4817 to make arrangements.

The benefits and claims relief actions include giving Veterans the option to submit their paperwork late for the following actions:

• perfecting claims
• challenging adverse decisions
• submitting Notices of Disagreement
• submitting Substantive Appeals
• responding to Supplemental Statements of the Case

Veterans requesting claim extensions can simply submit them with any late-filed paperwork and Veterans do not have to proactively request an extension in advance.

For added convenience, VA will also accept typed/digital signatures instead of wet signatures on its forms.

Those with questions can call 1-800-827-1000.

For Veterans who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and need immediate action on their appeals, as opposed to a filing extension, the Board of Veterans' Appeals will Advance their appeal on Docket (AOD). See the link to find out how to file for AOD and what documentation is required.

Apply for and manage the VA benefits and services you’ve earned as a Veteran, Servicemember, or family member—like health care, disability, education, and more.
