Lawmaker Blames 'Lack of Urgency' for Sluggish Military Records Processing

Veterans - if you have been trying to get copies of your military service records (needed to apply for VA benefits in many cases) and there has been a lengthy wait, this report from military.com may help you understand why. Our office recommends signing up for an account at www.va.gov and requesting your records electronically (it's free!).

Veterans - Did You Know?

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) seeks to raise awareness of availability and access to Compensation and Pension (C&P) disability examinations.

Although the pandemic has caused more than 200K examinations to accumulate, the VA has safely resumed in-person exams everywhere in the country and will schedule them as soon as possible using all applicable Center for Disease Control (CDC) safeguards.

In addition, the VA has implemented policy changes that enable broader use of the virtual Tele-C&P and Acceptable Clinical Evidence examination modalities by both the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) contract examiners.

VBA’s new Medical Disability Examination Office provides oversight of the contract examination program, to include monitoring contractor production, timeliness, quality, and invoicing.

The VA has a dedicated website [https://www.benefits.va.gov/COMPENSATION/claimexam.asprelated] to its resumption of in-person C&P examinations, and other websites that have answers to commonly asked questions about the examination process. Visit VA claim exam | Veterans Affairs [https://www.va.gov/disability/va-claim-exam/] for information ranging from what to expect at a VA examination, how to schedule an examination, and what happens after an examination.

Information on the VA’s Disability Compensation benefits can be found at Compensation Home (www.va.gov). With your assistance, the VA wants to inform Veterans that we have safely resumed access to all C&P examinations, and are ready to move forward with making decisions on their claims.

Please like and share to raise awareness!

Share your story of service!

VETERANS, LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!!! SCDVA is proud to be partnering with South Carolina ETV and SC Public Radio to participate in StoryCorps’ Military Voices Initiative.

Made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the initiative serves as an opportunity to capture the experiences of our veterans, service members and military families, as well as help civilians better understand the complex realities of veterans’ service and sacrifice. It will be achieved through a virtual interview process, taking place the weeks of April 12th and April 19th.

Virtual interviews will be submitted to the Library of Congress, where they will be preserved for generations to come. Select recordings will also air on SC Public Radio as part of a special series in 2022.

For those that would like more information before reserving a recording appointment, a virtual listening party will be held April 6 from 7 – 8 p.m. This event will provide an overview of the initiative, describe the recording process and answer any outstanding questions from participants (event flyer will be shared in a separate post to follow).
