Dougherty Road Traffic Notice

The City of Aiken Engineering & Utilities Department will be making a water line repair near 921 Dougherty Road on Thursday, August 27, beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Dougherty Road will be closed to through traffic in the work area while the repair is completed. A detour will be in place for residents and motorists traveling through the area.

Westbound traffic will be diverted to Mears Street, then Murrah Drive, and Tyler Street before returning to Dougherty Road. Eastbound traffic will follow the same detour route in reverse.

The City anticipates the closure will last only a few hours. However, the roadway will be fully reopened no later than 6:00 a.m. Friday, August 28.

Drivers are asked to use caution in the area, follow posted detour signs, and allow additional travel time.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while City crews complete this necessary repair.

Traffic Safety Advisory

The Aiken Department of Public Safety is issuing a traffic safety advisory regarding a new traffic control change implemented by the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

A new three-way stop has been installed at the intersection of Powderhouse Road and South Boundary Avenue. Traffic traveling east and west on South Boundary Avenue is now required to stop at the Powderhouse Road intersection.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution, remain alert to the new traffic pattern, and watch for posted signs when traveling through the area

Water Line Repair Completed Near Wire Road

The City of Aiken repaired a water line leak located near Wire Road and the Aiken Department of Public Safety Headquarters building on Beaufort Street.

Because of the size and configuration of the line, the repair required the distribution line to be temporarily shut down. Because the line supplies water to a portion of the city water distribution system, some customers might experience temporary water discoloration as normal system flow is restored.

City crews are conducting controlled flushing in the affected areas to clear discoloration that may have resulted from changes in water flow during the shutdown and repair.

Residents should be aware of the following:
*Water pressure should return to normal as the system stabilizes.
*Some customers may temporarily notice brown, yellow, or cloudy water.
*If discoloration is present, run cold water from a bathtub faucet or exterior spigot until the water clears.
*Avoid washing clothes or using hot water while the water remains discolored.
*If discoloration continues after flushing, contact the City at 803-642-7629 so the location can be evaluated.

Unless otherwise notified by the City, there is no boil water advisory associated with this repair.

The City appreciates the public’s patience while crews completed the repair and restored normal service.

The City of Aiken Engineering and Utilities announces that a portion of Wire Road between Rudy Mason Parkway and Beaufort Street, near the vicinity of the Aiken Department of Public Safety, is currently closed.

This closure is necessary to allow crews to complete water repair in the area.

At this time, there is no estimated time for the closure to be lifted.

Road Lane Closure Notice on Whiskey Road

Construction will continue this week on Whiskey Road with a northbound lane closure to make way for the turn lane improvements located just south of Oak Grove in coordination with the Tribute Parkway Improvements. All businesses will remain open during construction. The community may observe construction equipment, staff, and noise during work hours and may experience intermittent traffic delays on Whiskey Road from Dougherty Rd to East Gate/Oak Grove. The contractor will maintain a lane closure from 9:00a.m. until 4:00p.m. starting Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and expecting to be daily through Friday, July 10, 2026. Construction at the intersection will be ongoing through September 2026.

UPDATE July 1: The Boil Water Advisory has been lifted.

Today (June 30, 2026), the City of Aiken has implemented an emergency road closure on Powderhouse Road, between Furman and Vanderbilt. Earlier this morning, a commercial vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a fire hydrant, which resulted in a shutoff of water service to the Kensington neighborhood. This outage is currently impacting approximately 90 homes. Water service will remain suspended until the vehicle is removed. Once removal is complete, repairs will be initiated, and water service will be restored to the affected residences. Following restoration, a boil water advisory will be in effect for 24 hours. The City of Aiken Engineering & Utilities Department is issuing a traffic advisory for Thursday, April 16, 2026. The right northbound lane of Whiskey Road near Dougherty Road will be closed from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to allow City crews to repair a leaking water main.

Drivers are urged to use caution in the area and seek an alternate route if possible.

The City of Aiken Engineering and Utilities Department announces that hydrant flushing will take place in the east, west, and central areas of the City (see yellow highlighted area on the attached map) on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, beginning at approximately 6:00 a.m.

This routine flushing is part of scheduled system maintenance to ensure reliable water pressure and proper operation of the fire hydrant system. The process is expected to take about one week to complete.

There are no anticipated impacts to overall water volume or supply. Minor water pressure fluctuations may occur but should be minimal. Any temporary water discoloration should be limited and short‑lived.

Please do not tamper with or attempt to close any active fire hydrants.

The City of Aiken Engineering and Utilities Department will perform work to install a new sewer service tap at 115 Laurens St NW

Work hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day.

Traffic & Parking Impacts:
• The right southbound lane on Laurens Street, between Barnwell Avenue NW and Richland Avenue West, will be closed during work hours.
• Parking on the southbound side of Laurens Street will be impacted in the project area.
• Drivers should expect minor delays and are urged to use caution and follow posted signage.
