Outdoor Warning Sirens

Over the last couple years EM Washington, the cities in Washington County and a grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation installed new storm sirens throughout Washington County. It was a huge upgrade for the entire county to replace the old sirens that would maybe work and mabe not.

The purpose of these outdoor warning sirens are to alert you that a bad storm is moving into our area. When the sirens go off you should check the weather or take shelter immediately if conditions warrant it.

Today the new sirens are automatically triggered when the National Weather Service puts your town into severe thunderstorm warning with damaging winds , large hail or a tornado warning. Anytime the warning updates the siren goes off. That is the reason why there has been some repeat siren triggers back to back.

We know there have been some triggers and it seemed like no storm comes. The weather around here lately has been plumb wild large hail, big wind and multiple tornadoes in our county. Its hard to pinpoint exacty where the storm will track so they warn a larger area. The sirens aren't perfect yet and there are discussions behind the scenes on how to make the system better. It will take some time to get used to and get them dialed in. One thing I can promise you is the group of people working on the weather system has your safety in their best interest. If they go off please take them seriously.

Unfortunately today is one of those prime bad weather days. Stay weather aware and follow your safety plan if they do go off! See you all Sunday for Biscuits & Gravy😊

Alot of agencies working together in a high pressure situation. No emergencies are good but these are the types of calls as first responders we never want to hear. Yet not a single one of our volunteers second guessed running out the door today. From all the Emergency Respnders, the businesses supplying food/drinks, the volunteers blocking roads. Washingon County is a special place! Great work by everyone involved!

Brighton Fire would like to Thank Washington Fire, Wayland Fire, Richland Fire, Crawfordsville Fire, Ainsworth Fire, Washington county Ambulance, Washington county Sheriff's Washington County Communications, Washington county EMA and Brighton QRS for spending the day with us. It was a pipeline explosion, no one was around it at the time of the explosion. Forgot a few more, Washington county secondary roads, Iowa Highway patrol and Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy. There will be an on going investigation.
