At 860,410 acres, Cabeza Prieta is the 3rd largest refuge in the lower 48. Over 90 percent of the Refuge (or 803,418 acres, an area larger than the state of Rhode Island) was designated as wilderness by Congress in the 1990 Arizona Wilderness Act making it the largest wilderness area in Arizona. Bordering Organ Pipe National Monument and west of Ajo in southwestern Arizona, the refuge shares 56 miles of border with Sonora, Mexico.

Interested in learning about part of the refuge? Space is available for folks that want to hike down Charlie Bell Pass, visit the Sonoran pronghorn pen, or drive up to the viewing area of Child's Mountain with a staff member on Monday, March 9th.

Join us at 4:30 pm in our parking lot to caravan to the top of Child's Mountain! Tomorrow, February 14th. We suggest closed-toed shoes, something warm to wear for after the sunset, and a flashlight for after. Let us know if you have any questions and see you there.
