Training Conducted

Training remains a critical part of maintaining firefighter readiness and ensuring the highest level of service to our community.

During the month of June, firefighters trained on pumping operations using our Quint apparatus. Proper pump operation is an essential skill for firefighters, as it ensures a reliable water supply is delivered to attack lines during fire suppression operations. Understanding pump pressures, water flow, and apparatus capabilities helps firefighters operate safely and effectively during emergency incidents.

Firefighters also conducted training on the aerial ladder located on our Quint apparatus. The aerial ladder provides firefighters with access to elevated areas during structure fires, rescues, and other emergencies. In addition to reaching upper floors and rooftops, the aerial ladder is equipped with the ability to flow water from an elevated position. This capability allows firefighters to apply large amounts of water from above, improving fire suppression efforts while providing an additional level of safety during complex incidents.

• “We encourage all residents to take a few minutes each month to check smoke alarms, review home escape plans, and ensure house numbers are clearly visible from the road. These simple steps can make a significant difference during an emergency.”

☀️ HOT WEATHER SAFETY TIPS ☀️

With warmer temperatures arriving this week, the Akron Fire Department would like to remind residents to take precautions to stay safe during hot weather.

Stay Hydrated

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Limit Outdoor Activities

🌞 Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Dress for the Heat

👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool.

Never Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles

🚗 Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise to dangerous levels within minutes, even with the windows cracked.

Check on Family, Friends, and Neighbors

❤️ Older adults, young children, and those with medical conditions are at greater risk for heat-related illnesses.

Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

⚠️ Watch for:

* Heavy sweating
* Dizziness
* Weakness
* Nausea
* Headache

Move to a cool location, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

🚑 Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if someone experiences:

* Confusion or altered mental status
* Loss of consciousness
* Hot, dry skin or excessive sweating
* Body temperature above 103°F

Protect Pets

🐾 Ensure pets have access to fresh water, shade, and a cool place to rest.

Stay Informed

📱 Monitor local weather forecasts and heat advisories before planning outdoor activities.

Bay County went under tornado watch. There could be a chance for us as well. Keep your phones ready and please check on friends and family who doesn't have Facebook or any type of way to get notifications. Stay safe.

Village of Akron Residents,

The Akron Fire Department is closely monitoring the potential for severe thunderstorms and possible tornado development in our area. Conditions may change rapidly, and residents should stay alert throughout the day and evening.

What You Should Do Now:

✅ Monitor weather alerts through local TV, NOAA Weather Radio, trusted weather apps, and emergency notifications.

✅ Review your family’s emergency plan and identify your safest shelter location.

✅ Charge cell phones, portable batteries, and flashlights.

✅ Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, and loose items that could become airborne in strong winds.

✅ Keep a pair of shoes, flashlight, medications, and emergency supplies readily available.

If a Tornado Warning Is Issued:

🌪 Move immediately to a basement if available.

🌪 If no basement is available, go to the lowest floor of a sturdy building and shelter in a small interior room, hallway, bathroom, or closet away from windows.

🌪 Cover your head and neck with your arms, a mattress, blankets, or a helmet if available.

🌪 Stay away from windows, doors, and exterior walls.

🌪 Do not attempt to outrun a tornado in a vehicle if safe shelter is nearby.

Important Reminder:

* A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop.
* A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar. Take shelter immediately.

The Akron Fire Department will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as necessary. Please remain weather-aware and be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued.

What’s better than cooling off on a warm day?

Akron Fire had the privilege to be apart of Akron-Fairgrove Elementary School Water Fun Day. As it was warm out, the fire department members were jealous of the kids having fun and cooling off. They had a Blast!!!
