Last Sunday, Mayor Malik and City staff had the opportunity to visit the Youth Gaming Summit. This event uses gaming to inspire Akron's youth and provide them with educational sessions and mentorship opportunities.

This Summit addresses youth violence prevention while helping young people develop skills in technology, leadership, emotional wellness, and career exploration, and gives them a positive learning environment outside of school.

Thank you to all the partners involved with preparing this day of gaming, creativity, networking, and leveling up technological skills. It was great to see young, active minds at work!

Get ready, Akron! The fourth annual Akron City Festival is happening this year on Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th! The event will span over two days this year to make room for all the family-friendly fun activities. Day one will include a variety of showcases and day two will include a parade followed by a festival that will include games, food trucks, live music, bouncy houses, giveaways, artists, informational vendors, and more. Ron Marhofer Auto Family and Akron Energy Systems are the primary sponsors of this year’s event.

"The Akron City Festival is a celebration of the incredible talent, creativity, and potential of our young people. As students head back to school, we want them to know that this community believes in them and is committed to creating opportunities for them to learn, grow, and thrive. I'm grateful to the many organizations, schools, performers, sponsors, and volunteers who come together to make this weekend possible. When we invest in our young people and celebrate what makes them unique, we're investing in Akron's future." - Mayor Malik

Akron's iconic blue heron can now be seen on the side of The University of Akron Biology Department's new van!

The blue heron symbolizes the power of change, growth, and environmental stewardship, and it was implemented into our revised City logo for that very reason. It's incredible to see other organizations resonant with the blue heron and recognize the work that went into improving our waterways, bringing the blue heron back to our area. We're excited to see the new vehicle driving around town!

Akron, meet our new ride. 🪶🩵

The Biology Department’s new van is officially hitting the road!

Featuring one of Northeast Ohio’s most iconic birds: the great blue heron.

A familiar presence along our region’s rivers, wetlands, and lakes, including the habitats surrounding the Univ. of Akron Field Station , the great blue heron is a fitting symbol of biology, conservation, and our connection to the natural world.

A familiar bird in our waterways.
A familiar symbol in our city.

Featured in the City of Akron’s new logo, the heron represents the connection between our University, our Department, and the community we’re proud to serve.

Designed right here in Akron by Central Graphics , this van brings all of that together on four wheels.
So keep an eye out around campus and throughout Akron.

You’re going to be seeing this heron around.
And this is only the beginning. There’s more to this heron than meets the eye… 👀
