Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are becoming a common sight on Ohio's roads, bike paths, and neighborhoods. They provide a fun and environmentally friendly way to get around, but their growing popularity has also led to an increase in crashes and confusion about the rules of the road.
Under Ohio law, e-bikes are not the same as electric dirt bikes.
E-bikes are limited by law to three classes based on speed and motor assistance and are generally treated the same as traditional bicycles. That means riders must obey traffic signals, stop signs, right-of-way rules, and other bicycle laws. When riding after dark, they must also have the required lights, reflectors, and functioning brakes.
Electric dirt bikes, on the other hand, are designed primarily for off-road use. They are not street legal unless they meet all motorcycle equipment requirements, are titled and registered, display a license plate, and are operated by someone with a valid motorcycle endorsement.
Whether you're behind the wheel or on two wheels, everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe:
Drivers: Slow down, give cyclists plenty of room when passing, and stay alert for riders at intersections and crosswalks.
Riders: Wear a helmet, make yourself visible, obey traffic laws, and ride predictably.
As e-bike use continues to grow, education and courtesy are the keys to preventing injuries and ensuring everyone gets home safely.
Share the road. Respect one another. Ride responsibly.
