Highland Square Update: Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20

Last weekend, we were grateful that the collaborative efforts in Highland Square with the bars/businesses, Special Improvement District partners, Councilperson Wilson, law enforcement, and neighbors resulted in a peaceful weekend in the square.

As a result, this weekend, most of the bars/businesses will be open their normal hours. Highland Tavern has publicly shared that they will remain closed temporarily on Fridays and Saturdays.

The city-owned lot behind Chipotle will be chained closed at midnight on both Friday and Saturday. Those parked in the lot can still exit. The lot will continue to be monitored and those gathering in the lot can be arrested for trespass. Any vehicles remaining after 2:30am will be towed.

The Walgreens parking lot will again close at midnight and any vehicles still parked there risk being towed.

There will continue to be an increased law enforcement presence on both nights.

These will be the steps for this weekend (June 19 and 20) and we will continue to evaluate and adjust for future weekends.

May 2026 Detective of the Month

DETECTIVE SHEA FLAHERTY

Detective Flaherty was named May Detective of the Month for his teamwork and diligence regarding a theft from a local Napa Auto Parts Store.

On May 8, 2026, another detective put out a request for service regarding the theft of heavy-duty batteries from the lot at Napa Auto Parts. Shortly after that, the detective left for vacation.

During his absence, tips came in regarding the theft. Once Det. Flaherty realized the detective on that case was on vacation, he did not hesitate to follow the lead. He located and interviewed suspects, and ultimately signed warrants on two males on May 18, 2026, closing the case before the detective returned from vacation.

Although investigative work is what he does daily, it was Detective Flaherty's willingness to help a teammate while they were off, and determination in completing the case in its entirety. The citizens of Akron, as well as teammates, benefit regularly from his efforts and positive attitude.

May 2026 Officer(s) of the Month

OFFICER HUDSON & OFFICER MCGRAW

On May 21, 2026, Officer Hudson and Officer McGraw pursued a stolen vehicle. The pursuit ended abruptly when all three occupants bailed out of the moving vehicle. All three suspects wore black clothing, black colored ski masks, and were armed with handguns. The suspects all ran from the officers and fled in different directions.

Officer Hudson and Officer McGraw pursued the suspects on foot. The officers became separated and pursued the suspects in different directions. Two suspects were apprehended, one by each of them, in different locations. Two loaded handguns, a G***k 26 and a G***k 22, were later recovered within the flight paths of both suspects. Both handguns had extended magazines.

Despite the circumstances of this encounter, both officers showed incredible restraint and bravery which led to the apprehension of two of the suspects without harm to themselves, the public, or the suspects involved.

Their commitment and dedication to the city of Akron, its citizens, and the Akron Police Department’s mission and core values, are not without notice as they continue to serve daily.
