So important to understand... EVERYONE benefits from a functioning sewer, whether you use it or not... And what lacks in the storm of media around this story is many well established public utilities use the practice of charging a minimal fee for sewer, connected or not. This is not new to Alabaster (was approved and voted in 30 years ago) nor is it unique to Alabaster. Utilities all over Alabama charge sewer fees.

But...

The fee needs to be fair and that's especially true for exemptions like swimming pools and irrigation. Proud to vote for these changes to help residents and glad our admin and water board worked quickly to make these fixes.

During last night’s meeting, the City Council approved multiple changes to the residential water, sewer and trash rate structure to help residents who experience high water usage events (such as lawn irrigation or filling a swimming pool) lower their sewer bills. The changes will also lower the base sewer rate charged to customers on septic who are within 200 feet of a sewer line. Details ⬇️
👉Alabaster’s sewer rates are tied to monthly water usage. High monthly water usage, such as filling a swimming pool or heavy irrigation, can cause a corresponding higher sewer bill.
👉The city has significantly reduced the cost to install a separate residential irrigation meter from $4,500 to the cost of the actual meter (usually between $600-$800). A separate irrigation meter allows residents to remove water used for irrigation purposes from their sewer bill.
👉The city now allows a once-a-year adjustment for filling a pool. The adjustment allows customers to remove water used for filling a pool from their sewer bill.
👉The city will lower the base rate to $30 for customers on septic who are within 200 feet of a sewer line. Customers on septic should call the Alabaster Water Board at 205–663–6155 to ensure they are charged the $30 base rate rather than the previous higher rate. The city will waive sewer tap fees for customers on septic wishing to connect to the city’s sewer line.

📞To request a separate residential irrigation meter, pool-filling adjustment or to be charged the base $30 rate if you’re on septic, contact the Alabaster Water Board at 205–663–6155.
