What parents need to know about: WhatsApp

With more than 1.5 billion users and in more than 180 countries, WhatsApp is one of the most popular free messaging apps in the world (Online Safety, 2020).

According to Online Safety (2020), a 2017 study found that by the age of 14, the average child will have sent more than 30,000 WhatsApp messages and three weeks of video chat!

Users can send and receive photos, text, videos, and documents to include voice and video calls through an Internet or Wi-Fi connection (WhatsApp, 2020).

WhatsApp offers “end-to-end encryption,” which means that messages can only be read by the sender and the recipient or all members in a group chat (WhatsApp, 2020).

Why is it so important to talk about TDV? Young people (ages 11-24) who are in abusive or unhealthy relationships are at a higher risk of experiencing domestic violence (DV) in relationships they have as adults. Teens and young adults often think some behaviors, like teasing and name-calling, are a “normal” part of a relationship—but these behaviors can become abusive and develop into serious forms of violence. However, many teens do not talk about unhealthy behaviors because they are afraid to tell family and friends. TDV can leave a mark on a person’s life even after the relationship is over, putting their physical and emotional health at risk. Victims/survivors of teen dating violence are more likely to experience depression and anxiety symptoms, engage in unhealthy behaviors such as substance misuse, exhibit antisocial behaviors, and think about suicide.⠀

What parents need to know about: Kik

Kik (or Kik Messenger) is a free messaging app used by 300 million people worldwide (Online Safety, 2020). The app lets users exchange messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and webpages via a Wi-Fi connection or data plan (Kik, 2018).

Kik is unusual in that your child can sign up without a phone number and then add and message other people via just their username (Kik, 2018).

According to Kik (2018), the app is aimed at anyone aged 13 years and older – the app says teens between 13 and 18 years old will need parental permission, but it DOES NOT verify ages.

12/31/2019

New Year's is just around the corner. As you're planning your celebration, please take into consideration that between 6 p.m. on December 31 and 6 a.m. on January 1 are the most dangerous hours of the year to drive or ride in a car on our nation's roadways.
If your celebrations this year will include alcohol, follow these tips to ensure you have a safe start to 2020:

1. Make a plan ahead of time. Don't wait until you've started drinking to figure out how you're going to get home.
2. Never get in the car with a driver who has been drinking. Even one alcoholic beverage can impair his or her ability to drive safely.
3. Make sure friends and family who celebrate with you have a safe ride home, or invite them to sleep on your couch or spare bed.
4. Plan to call a taxi or use a ride-sharing service to help you get home safely.
5. If you wake up early on New Year's Day after consuming too many adult beverages the night before, be aware that you could still be legally intoxicated.

If you witness a driver who you suspect may be driving under the influence, call 9-1-1.

Have a safe and happy New Year!
