Besides crime, there is probably no issue of greater significance to Alamedans than housing. We have debated the “housing element” for years, and it is now decision time: on November 15, the Alameda City Council will be voting on the housing element and the recommendation to increase housing density.

The next United Democrats of Alameda meeting will focus on housing with arguably the two best experts on the subject: Paul Foreman and Andrew Thomas. Paul is a retired judge, who sits on the board of the Alameda Citizens Task and serves as legislative analyst for Livable California. Andrew is the Director of Planning, Building, and Transportation for the City of Alameda. In addition to his instrumental role on the housing element, he has worked on a variety of initiatives since 2002, including plans for Alameda Point, Alameda Landing, and the Northern Waterfront; and expansion of public transportation services funded by new development.

After the launch of our community group, it's clear we've hit a nerve. We're saddened though not surprised at the disinformation directed at us. Too many accusations to list but our response to them are here

We believe in having honest and respectful conversations about the important issues for Alamedan's, and nothing is more important than public safety.

For our kickoff event, we discussed Public Safety with the legendary Burny Matthews, a lifelong police officer who served in multiple jurisdictions and was Police Chief in East Palo Alto and Alameda for 12 years. Here are key takeaways from the event:

1. Burny shared Alameda has an effective, well-trained police force with a skilled leader in Chief Nishant Joshi. He said it is critical we fully staff the police department.

2. City Council actions to defund the Alameda police by 40% hurt public safety and the morale of our first responders.

3. Burny warned that new City Council proposals to implement oversight committees and micromanage police policies will hinder officers from doing their job. He strongly believes officer need to be held to high standards and held accountable but said that community needs to let them do their jobs.

The discussion was informative and nuanced on the topic of Public Safety and how to build strong and safe communities.
