This week, your Alameda City Firefighters Local 689 headed to Sacramento to educate our local legislators on current firefighter issues and CPF-sponsored bills at the State Capitol. We were able to meet with a dozen or so legislators to advocate for issues that directly impact our firefighters.

This morning, your Alameda City Firefighters L689 and others from CA stood shoulder to shoulder at the State Capitol with CPF and other Locals up and down California to advocate for a fair pension reform during the Assembly Public Employment and Retirement Committee Hearing on AB 1383! We are exposed to way more dangers and deserve a fair retirement, without doing more damage to ourselves.

Alameda City firefighters don’t just care for people, they care for their furry family members too! After responding to a call where a patient had to be transported to the hospital, our crew made sure their loyal pup was safe and cared for. A quick trip to PetSmart for food and a leash later, and this good boy was reunited with his owner. Just another day of looking out for our community!

Local 689 Alameda City Firefighters sends prayers and condolences to our close neighbors in Fremont. We stand strong with you❤️🙏🏽

It is with profound sadness that the Fremont Fire Department announces the off-duty death of Firefighter Anthony Ganzler on March 17, 2025.

Yesterday, March 17, 2025, at 10:45 AM, Fire Chief Zoraida Diaz was notified by the Fire Chief of the Elk Grove Fire Department that Fremont Firefighter Anthony Ganzler suffered a cardiac event and passed away in Elk Grove, CA.

We extend our deepest condolences to Anthony’s family, friends and loved ones throughout our own ranks and beyond.

Anthony joined the Fremont Fire Department in 2019 and was a member of the Fremont Fire Lateral Academy Class 2019-1.

The Fremont Fire Department will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

This past Saturday, some of our members took part in the Polar Plunge!

Starts off with a 5K run and then a dip in the cold Bay waters! This fun dip into the Bay supports Special Olympic athletes and celebrates community, inclusivity, and FUN!

Earlier today, Local 689 showed out at the Dogs vs Hogs (Firefighters vs Cops) football game at Sacramento City College to support one of our own, Corey Crowder.

Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025 at 11 AM, at Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall, 126 1st St W., Sonoma, 95476.

We suggest all Uniform Personnel to wear Class A’s. Please RSVP for the service to assist the planning committee with a rough head count and contact Dallas Andrews 510-846-5297

We would also like to invite all family and friends right after the service to partake in some food and drinks as we celebrate the life of Brother Gillion.

It is with deepest regret and sorrow that we report the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Sean Gillion, IAFF 10th District Local 689 – Alameda, California. Brother Gillion, 53, passed away on Dec. 3, 2024 after succumbing to occupational cancer.

Happy Holidays! This past weekend Alameda City Firefighters L689 hosted our annual toy drive. We were able to provide toys to almost 400 families; reaching about 2000 children. We want to thank the community, the businesses involved, and all of the donations we received to make this toy drive possible. 🎁 🎄
