Did you know how to properly dispose of EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) and PLBs (Personal Locator Beacons)?

🔒🔦 Time to Decommission Your 406 MHz Beacon? Here’s How to Do It Right! 🔦🔒

When your beacon reaches the end of its life cycle, proper disposal is crucial! 🚫🗑️ Don’t just throw it away—here’s why:

❌ Avoid False Activations: Disposing of it incorrectly can lead to accidental activations, resulting in fines and unnecessary search efforts. SAR crews are required to respond to these signals!

🔧 Safe Disposal Steps:

Dismantle Your Beacon: Carefully take it apart.
Remove the Batteries: Don’t forget this step!
Recycle: Both the batteries and the beacon case should be recycled—NEVER put them in landfill! Lithium batteries can harm the environment. 🌎♻️
Update Your Registration: Contact the NOAA registration authority to inform them about your beacon's decommissioning. Call 1-888-212-SAVE (7283).

Let’s keep our waterways safe and responsible!

THE MONTEREY COAST GUARD PIER IS BACK OPEN TO THE PUBLIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for bearing with us while we made necessary repairs critical to public safety and security following the last couple of winter storms. Our only ask is that if you visit the pier in the near future, please leave it as you found it; if you pack it in, pack it out.
