A message from Katherine Schwartz, Executive Director of Alameda Family Services:

There aren't any words that do justice to the unfathomable tragedy that occurred yesterday in Texas or in Buffalo on May 14th, just a week before, or for any of the other shootings that have taken place.

There are no moments of silence or words of support that make any difference to the families that will live without their precious children and loved ones.
The traumatic impact of these events cannot be measured or understood either for those directly affected or for the community and country as a whole.

I will only say that we must begin to place well-being above all else. We must begin to make decisions with that goal in mind. Alameda Family Services is committed to the realization of well-being for all and stands firmly in support of all necessary steps it will require to get there. We must not give up and we will not give up.

These events can be traumatizing, and your emotions are valid. If you need support in any way, please call us at 510-629-6210. We are here to support you.

Hundreds are on the waitlists for treatment. Mental and behavioral health related emergency room visits have skyrocketed for children and young people.

Alameda County must act now to safeguard our community. Let your voice be heard!

Scan this code to lend your voice to this important issue. A letter will be automatically generated and sent to every member of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors urging them to take action on this mental health state of emergency.

How is mental health important to you?

Check out what one of our SBHC Youth Advisory Board interns had to say during today’s event for Mental Health Awareness Month held at both Encinal and Alameda High School.

Alameda Family Services, along with the City of Alameda Early Learning Community Network, was on hand for the East Bay Regional Park-Shoreline Clean Up for Earth Day at Crab Cove last month.

Our newly remodeled ELCN mobile Family Resource Center, staffed or operated by Alameda Family Services, made its debut. Two student interns from the AUSD Island High School Pathways Program assisted in activities provided to the children and families. Thank you Hayden Hoyt and Natalie Inouye!

Activities included a scavenger hunt, book giveaway, and a garden growing project. We also had applications for our Fall Head Start Program. The children enjoyed learning about planting and the importance of cleaning up our earth.

Thank you to everyone for your support!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there, and extra love to those struggling with this day.

“Where today is a day of
remembering,
honoring,
celebrating,
creating,
or waiting,
nurturing,
unearthing,
practicing gratitude,
or just making it through,
there is room, right here for you
to let today be what it needs to be,
welcoming the grace
that gives you room
to breathe.”

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and an excellent month to reach out to people who you haven’t spoken to in awhile. Check in on your loved ones and find out if they need any support.

Did you know?
1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime.
Half of all lifetime mental health conditions begin by age 14 and 75% by age 24.
Members of the LGBTQ community are twice as likely to have a mental health condition.
Because of the stigma, many people do not seek treatment for mental illness; only 44% of adults with diagnosable mental illness receive treatment.

We are in a mental health crisis and YOUR VOICE MATTERS!

Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) funding allows Alameda County Behavioral Health to make community driven choices on how to invest its dollars. Your voice can make a difference in this effort!

Please help us put $35 million dollars of last year's unspent funding into mental health and supportive services to help our communities today. Make sure to let Alameda County Behavioral Health know what you think by this Saturday, April 30th!

https://acmhsa.org/reports-data/#2022-2023plancomments

Suggested comment: I recommend Alameda County Behavioral Health use as much of the MHSA rollover funds as possible, to leverage federal funding and increase funding for community based organizations providing behavioral health services. *feel free to add your own experiences to personalize it*

The Alameda CARE Team has been responding to non-violent mental health crises in the City of Alameda since Dec. 16, 2021. The team is made up of Alameda Fire Department Paramedics and EMTs who have gone through 100 hours of mental health crisis training.

Alameda Family Services has been providing 24/7 on-call crisis consultation to the Alameda Fire Department to support deescalation, safety planning and decisions around voluntary and involuntary psychiatric holds for youth and adults. AFS also provides the AFD team with crisis trainings and support.

The program has been very successful at reducing involuntary holds, safely deescalating people in crisis and connecting people in crisis to AFS' Clinical Case Manager who provides intensive case management to support connection to services and resources that promote ongoing mental health stabilization.

Did you know that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month? Thriving families depend on strong support systems. Alameda Family Services is here to help parents during their most challenging times, connecting them directly to resources in the community, and providing a strength based approach to supporting child development, school readiness and socialization for young children.

By providing all families with equal opportunity and access to the supports they need, we can help improve the safety and well-being of children and youth in our community and across the country. Visit the National Child Abuse Prevention Month website at www.childwelfare.gov/preventionmonth for more information.

5 things to repeat to yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed:

1. I am giving myself permission to take the time I need to rest.
2. I am giving myself permission to not have it all figured out at once.
3. I am giving myself permission to not have to be everything to everyone.
4. I am giving myself permission to add my own health and well-being to the list of things I care about.
5. I am giving myself permission to feel deeply and notice what I am feeling…while knowing this doesn’t mean I have to carry everything on my shoulders.

Tag a friend who may need the reminder.

This time of year can bring a lot of mixed feelings as college letters start coming in. Whether it’s the news you want to hear or not, just remember - you are so much more than your application results.

How have you supported friends or family who are struggling with college application results and admission decisions? Here is an example from of how you can talk to loved ones during this process.

Alameda Family Services wants to thank all of our donors and sponsors in 2021. We are forever grateful for your support of our Chef's Kitchen and Celebration of Community Partnerships events. With your help we raised over $50,000 dollars for mental health and family support services in Alameda. We also want to thank our community partners, especially the Alameda Education Foundation. Together we are able to create a network of services that wraps around individuals and families in need. A special thank you to the Alameda Unified School District and Jennifer Williams, School Board President, and the rest of the school board and the Parent Teacher Associations for their support. We deeply appreciate all you have done to ensure mental health services for youth and families in the schools.

Lastly, we want to thank the City of Alameda, the Mayor, and the City Council, particularly Trish Herrera-Spencer, for the opportunity to partner with the Alameda Fire Department in providing an alternative to police response for those experiencing a mental health crisis. Thank you for helping us help Alameda! Alameda Family Services also recognizes the incredible loss of Supervisor Wilma Chan, a beacon of progressive change for so many years.
