2021 Hazard Mitigation and Adaptation Plan

Alameda is updating its Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Plan and we are seeking your input.
The plan:
• describes the natural and climate hazards that impact Alameda's people, buildings, businesses and asset;
• identifies our vulnerability to those hazards, and;
• describes actions that can be taken to reduce our risk from these hazards.
Please take a moment to take this brief survey that will help inform the City’s process as this plan is developed.

Monarch Butterfly Garden in Jean Sweeney Park, organized by Jim Sweeney

Help Build A Monarch Butterfly Habitat in Jean Sweeney Park
The Jean Sweeney Open Space Park Fund and the Alameda Recreation & Parks Department (ARPD) are sponsoring the creation of a Monarch Butterfly Habitat in the East end of the Jean Sweeney Open Space Park. The new habitat will be located between the playground and Sherman Street in front of the Central Self Storage warehouse.
The Jean Sweeney Open Space Park Fund will manage the necessary funding through a Go-Fund-Me page ( https://gofund.me/e508a4bf ) All donations are tax-deductable.
Funding will be used to purchase the necessary upgrades to the Jean Sweeney Park site that include ARPD staff time to prepare the site with new soil, professional irrigation, and the purchase and planting of the nectar plants necessary to feed the butterflies once they emerge as butterflies.
Community volunteers will be invited to assist with the new habitat development and ongoing maintenance. The entire community, individuals, organizations, businesses and school groups are invited to join in this effort to provide this new space in Alameda for the Monarch Butterfly. It's impossible to obtain pesticide free milkweed from plant nurseries so we will grow our own. Anyone who wants to help with the habitat space or by growing milkweed send email to [email protected].
The Monarch Butterfly enjoys Alameda as part of its natural habit throughout California. There is a nationwide and statewide drive to assist the Monarchs by growing new habitat for the endangered species. The habitat in the Jean Sweeney Park will be an opportunity for our entire community to join in helping create this new home for Monarchs right here in Alameda.
We hope all of Alameda will join us in this project and will want to learn about the Monarch Butterfly and how Alamedans can help Monarchs survive changes that are threatening their survival. Major donations will be acknowledged at the habitat site with signage.
Western monarch butterflies are nearly extinct. California has a plan to save them. Alameda can also help.

What part of this sign do people still not get or think this does not apply to them? I see the caution tape torn off daily in Sweeney Open Space blowing around for others to pick up. I get it, it’s hard to keep little ones from playing outdoors for 6+ months but these are adults removing the tape from tables to set up for a party, using the taped off pavilion instead of ipen grass area and removing tape blocking play entrances. Tape at slide removed daily too. If playgrounds were open, ARPD wouldn’t be using staff hours to put this back up every day. WTH. Amazing how many simply don’t care. How much $ are we spending daily putting barriers up?
What is the timeline / criteria for re-opening playgrounds?
Amazing how many people don’t think rules or precautions apply to them. What part of this orange do-not-cross stuff do people repeatedly not understand? Sigh. Guess next the parks will have to just remove everything.
Dear ARPD: whoever was shooting off fireworks last night in the Sweeney open space tore down almost all of your caution tape especially on play structures. Also there’s a lot of these little blue pieces of paper all around which is probably from fireworks I’m guessing. I’m sure it will be worse tonight and tomorrow and I would hate to see the open space catch fire.
Tennis courts, Washington Park, Krusi, Leydecker, were open for one day on May 4th, 2020...now all locked. Why!? We have been given rules by which to play and we need to have an outlet. Get it together please. Confusing information is not helpful.

Feeling pampered at Mastick Senior Center.
It would be super cool if you offer the $3.00 tea-shirts to all entrants. On Saturday, September 29th, my wife and I waited around until about 8:15 am, to pick up her "tea-shirt" which she had paid $45 to enter, etc. We were told because she had joined 7 days late, she didn't get one???? No big deal, except that this was in conflict with another plan we had. Because we waited the 45 mins, to get your table all set up, etc. I was in turn late for the event I was trying to make in San Francisco, and both events we couldn't attend! I rarely get Saturdays off from work and was really looking forward to having it off with my wife. But instead I found myself waiting for an event to start that I couldn't attend, and being late for another event that I couldn't race to get to on time. Shame on you for being so cheap! Give shirts to all "payees." That's only common in all these types of events!!!! Races and organized events usually get some type of "incentive." Why can't this be the policy here? It's "free advertising" for your organization.
Thought you'd like to know people are driving and parking on the lawn at Godfrey Park (off Seminary Road) for picnics, games and practices. Is ARPD is ok with this? If not, maybe signs will help.
Props to teacher Allison in How to Be a Ninja camp this week. My son rarely enjoys camp, and this week he couldn't wait to be there every day! Thanks ARPD for picking a great camp!!!
