First 5 Alameda County

First 5 Alameda County First 5 Alameda County helps families and children 0-5. Research shows that a child's brain develops most dramatically during the first five years of life.

We do this by supporting a comprehensive system of early childhood care in Alameda County that helps prepare kids for success in school and reach their full potential. First 5 Alameda County is an innovative public entity created by passage of Proposition 10 in 1998 which added fifty cents per pack of ci******es to help fund early care and education for children 0-5. To ensure that more children a

Early Treatment for Autism Is Critical, New Report Says

The authors of a new clinical report on autism "hope to see more general pediatricians and primary care providers working with families, even while they are waiting for a full evaluation." Early identification and intervention can make a world of difference for families who often have to wait to access special preschool programs or other treatment.

Experts urge early identification and referral for treatment, even if a formal diagnosis has not been confirmed.

Opinion | How to Break the Poverty Cycle

Can preschool experience help break the cycle of poverty? The answer is "a resounding yes" for children who participated AND future generations.

How much good does a preschool experience offer children born in poverty? Enough to make their later lives much better, and they pass a heritage of opportunity on to their own children.

Why Affordable Childcare Is Out of Reach For So Many People

Long, but worthwhile read about the need for high-quality, affordable child care across the country leaving children and caregivers in crisis. Cost barriers for families and low wages for child care providers equate to a broken system.

Industry regulations, rights of immigrants, and the division of labor between men and women affect the issue.

The Cost in Care of High Cost Housing

The Bay Area's housing crisis puts significant stress on our region's early childhood educators, who typically earn less than $15/hour. For those who don't leave the area or the profession, what's the toll on them and the children in their care?

A looming crisis—in California will rising housing costs create a shortage of early childhood teachers?

As we continue to grow, we want to thank YOU for placing your trust and confidence in us.

This past fiscal year, has brought exciting new expansion like the inclusion of families on Medi-Cal to receive diapers from the San Francisco Diaper Bank. We also finalized two independent program evaluations, generously underwritten by First 5 Alameda County and San Francisco Human Services Agency

Did you know .... 97% of families feel less stressed and 96% say their baby is healthier, after receiving diapers.

Nationally, we are very proud our program evaluation findings served as an inspiration for the first ever federally funded pilot diaper program U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Your unmatched support is making a difference in the lives of so many. We can not thank you enough, but we can try! Thank you 💜 Thank you 💜 Thank you💜 Thank you 💜 Thank you 💜

Family child care providers are business owners, educators, and community leaders, who support working parents and families with home-based holistic care and school readiness for young children. Since launching in 2021, the Oakland / Alameda County Family Child Care Policy Program has advocated for family child care providers and their businesses through connecting with elected officials and early childhood systems partners. OSSS, along with BANANAS and First 5 Alameda County, supports the Family Child Care Policy Program. Learn more: https://www.oaklandsmartandstrong.org/blog/family-child-care-providers-lead-the-way
We were able to offer free school supplies to families in need at our Back to School Giveaway event at both our Oakland and Hayward offices. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors who helped set these children on the right track to succeed in school. Thank you Help A Mother Out for diapers. Thank you East Bay Community Foundation for allowing us to get many things, including elementary-age backpacks. Thank you First 5 Alameda County and Blaisdell's Business Products for backpacks as well. Thank you Blue Shield of California, Oakland Literacy Coalition, and Eat Learn Play Foundation for the books. And thank you Operation Warm for shoes .

These donors, along with support from 4Cs staff and volunteers, have ensured that children have what they need to successfully return to the classroom as they deserve the opportunity and resources to learn!

For adults, it is often difficult to know where to turn for support in addressing our mental health needs.

For children, it is even more difficult as they often don’t have the language skills to express their feelings and needs. This is particularly true for those who experience physical and/or mental trauma and who live in under-resourced communities where mental health care is often lacking or difficult to access.

Research has shown that early childhood trauma can lead to learning problems and the onset of chronic physical and mental health conditions later in life. Programs like DULCE (Developmental Understanding and Legal Collaboration for Everyone) aim to prevent and mitigate the stress that both infants and parents experience in the first 6 months of the child’s life.

DULCE was started at Alameda Health System (AHS) with generous grants from First 5 Alameda County, but this grant funding will end soon. Alameda Health System Foundation is partnering with Dr. Pam Simms-Mackey, MD, FAAP, Chair of Pediatrics at AHS, to secure funding to ensure continued support for DULCE and other programs focused on early childhood development.

We are grateful to the providers and staff at AHS who work diligently to give our youngest community members the best possible start in life.

If you would like to donate to support programs like DULCE, visit foundationahs.org.

Providing for Medi-Cal children 0-5 ensures that they receive the important visits they need. Narratives are the stories we tell ourselves and each other to help make sense of the world. This webinar examines the 11 current narratives about poverty, race and economic mobility. With new resources and case studies, we can learn how to create narratives that advance solutions we know are key to ensuring families realize economic success from one generation to the next.

Presented by First 5 Alameda County

BANANAS and the First 5 Alameda County community has lost a dear friend, a hero, and a staunch advocate for the voice of fathers and fatherhood. The voice, needs, and perspectives of fathers are often left out of the conversation in parenting, especially in the human and social services ecosystem.

Gary V. Thompson founded the Fathers Corps with the goal to raise awareness of family, parent, community, and social support programs of the need to be more intentional and effective with the engagement and support of fathers and father-figures. The Fathers Corps is recognized locally, statewide, and nationally as a model for building father-friendly systems of care.
