Congratulations to Staff Sergeant Wong, 0321, who pinned on Staff Sergeant today!
Marines, Sailors, families, and friends,
I took control over the unit page about 2 1/2 years ago after I noticed the page wasn't being kept up to date. I hope you have enjoyed the increase in posts and pictures of our training and feel more closely connected to what is going on at the company and the detachment. Yesterday, after 20 years of active duty, I held my retirement ceremony in the back of our HTC and now I am officially turning over as the admin for this page.
I wanted to take a minute and thank all the Marines and Sailors, both my active duty staff and our reserve chain of command, who have worked with me over the past three years. You all have helped turn the detachment around and have led the efforts to where we are now with our reservists training with their active duty counterparts during drill periods and supporting operations such as RIMPAC. Morale at the detachment hasn't been higher in recent memory and the command is in a great place. I know my replacement will keep moving it forward.
Semper Fidelis!

The All Marine Message on Social Media has been updated as a response to the adverse behavior of Marines online. This directive outlines how Marines will be held accountable for inappropriate online activities.
According to the ALMAR, Marines must avoid actions online that threaten the morale, operational readiness and security, or public standing of their units, or that compromise the Marine Corps' core values.

The Commandant addresses the Marines United issue:
What we say and do each day represents who we are, there is no time off for Marines.
We are all-in 24/7, and if that commitment to excellence interferes with your “me time” or if you can’t or are unwilling to commit to contributing 100 percent to our Corps’ warfighting ability by being a good teammate and improving cohesion and trust then I have to ask you, “Do you really want to be a Marine?”

On D-Day of the Battle of Iwo Jima, Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone was killed in action (19 February 1945).
By the time Basilone landed on Iwo Jima, he had already distinguished himself as a legend of the Corps for his actions on Guadalcanal. During the battle for Guadalcanal, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Basilone used a machine gun and a pistol to kill 38 of the enemy from his emplacement and received the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
At Iwo Jima, Basilone single-handedly captured a Japanese blockhouse before dying in a mortar barrage. For his heroic actions, he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. While at Iwo Jima he was attached to the 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division.
Find out more about Basilone in our WWII Gallery. Visitors can also view Basilone's Medal of Honor and Navy Cross in the Legacy Walk Gallery.

It’s Marine Monday!
In recognition of African-American History Month, today we highlight one of the first African-Americans to enlist in the Marine Corps, Gilbert “Hashmark” Johnson.
Born in rural Mount Hebron, Alabama, Johnson attended Stillman College in 1922, aspiring to become a minister. He left college the following year, however, and joined the Army. At the end of his enlistment in October 1929, Johnson was discharged as a corporal. After four years of civilian life, he decided to try the Navy. The Navy accepted Johnson into Steward's Branch, the only job available to African Americans at that time, and he served for nearly 10 years. Johnson was aboard the USS Wyoming during the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
The following year, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the integration of the armed forces, Johnson requested a transfer from the Navy to the Marine Corps. He went on to serve the last 17 of his 32-year military career in the Marine Corps. Throughout his Marine Corps career, Johnson provided leadership to his younger and less experienced comrades. It was at Montford Point he was given the name "Hashmark," because of his age and many years of service.
In 1943, he was among the first African American men to be trained as Marine drill instructors. He also served as field sergeant in charge of all recruit training at Montford Point. As a member of the 52d Defense Battalion on Guam in World War II, "Hashmark" asked that African American Marines be assigned to combat patrols from which they were currently exempt. Once approved, he personally led 25 combat patrols.
Johnson later served in Korea with the 1st Shore Party Battalion, then later with 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, and finally as administrative advisor at the Headquarters of the Korean Marine Corps. He went on to become one of the first African-American sergeants major in the Marine Corps. Sergeant Major Johnson transferred to the Fleet Marine Force Reserve in 1957 and retired in 1959.
Sergeant Major Johnson passed away in 1972. On 19 April 1974, the Montford Point facility at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was dedicated as Camp Gilbert H. Johnson, Montford Point, Camp Lejeune, in honor of this outstanding Marine.
Find out more about Gilbert “Hashmark” Johnson in our Montford Point exhibit in our World World II Gallery.

The Company just wrapped up hosting a 4thMarDiv Dive package at the Detachment. Divers from 4th Recon Bn, 3D Force, and 4th Force participated in the training that was planned and coordinated by members of all three commands.
We also had the honor of diving at the USS Arizona Memorial on December 8th, one day after the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and NAS Kaneohe. A true honor! American flags carried by our divers will be found displayed at our HTCs in the near future.
More pictures to follow once they all have been consolidated.
