In Bill Peet’s The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock, the main character is faced with banishment because his tail has just two (very weird) eyespots. But this same strange tail saves his companions (with more conventional plumage) from a tiger. Every year, Franklin 3rd graders in Jodi Barzelatto’s class read this book and set out to duplicate Bill Peet's illustrations where feathers are always flying. With markers, crayons and colored pencils, students capture each peacock's elegant profile. Then they fill the background with tail feathers that explode with color and movement.

The annual Snowflake Shoppe will be open for business on December 12th; that's less than a month away! We need some crafts/small items for the students to purchase. We may not all be experts at crafting, but with the help of Pinterest and Michael's nearby, anyone can make/buy something fun. 40 pens! 40 sticker sheets! Art turned into play when Franklin 2nd graders made collaborative monsters. For inspiration, students looked at the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Wangechi Mutu, to see how these artists used line, color and collage to make powerful images. Then came the collaboration. Each student made multiple ‘monster parts’ (eyes, ears, antennas, etc.) and placed them on the top of their desk. Students raced around the room, trading monster parts. They collaged their own creatures out of everything that they had collected. The project was finished with colorful tempera painting. Classroom Teachers: Danielle La Barre, Tina Twite. Art Teacher: Margarethe Olsson.
