Today wraps up National EMS Week, and we want to close it out by shining a light on a group that doesn’t always get the recognition they deserve - the directors and leaders of EMS agencies across this country.

While our crews are on the front lines answering calls, EMS directors are working behind the scenes in ways most people never see. They’re managing budgets, navigating regulations, fighting for resources, advocating for their people, and making the hard calls that keep agencies running - often long after everyone else has gone home.

Leadership in EMS can be a lonely place, and yet they show up every single day because they believe in this mission just as much as the crew members pulling on their gloves.

To every EMS director, medical director, and agency leader out there - thank you. The work you do quietly and consistently makes everything else possible.

And to our own director, Will Huff - thank you for everything you pour into Crockett County Ambulance Service. Your crew sees it, even when it feels like no one does. Thank
you for cooking a delicious breakfast for our crews and first responders!

Happy last day of National EMS Week to leaders everywhere. You matter more than you know.

Thank you Phil Sanderson with AMB, our billing company, for celebrating the CCAS team for EMS Week!

Transitioning our billing to AMB was one of the best decisions as they have become a true partner in patient advocacy to help optimize our revenue cycle, reduce financial risks, and stabilize our patient accounts.

We appreciate Phil and the AMB team!

Today begins a special week for our team - It’s National EMS Week!

Honoring our past: CCAS began in 1972 under the capable leadership of Larry Griffin. EMS was a brand new profession and many had no idea what it was all about! Brandon Ward, the current EMS director for the state of Tennessee, began leading our local ambulance service after Larry Griffin was elected county mayor for our county.

Will Huff currently leads our service and we are glad to have him at the helm.

At each step of the way, we have sought to increase services, be responsible fiscally, capture all revenue options, and add true value to the lives of our citizens.

We have expanded our clinical offerings in a major way and we believe we are making the lives of our people better…by improving outcomes together.

The “secret sauce” is our people. Our dispatchers, first responders, deputies, firefighters, EMA, rescue techs, Air Evac flight crew members, and especially our EMS team all work together - to improve outcomes.

Our future is bright! With the broad support of our citizens, the county commission, the EMS committee, Budget Chair Joe Gibson, and County Mayor Gary Reasons - we will continue forging a path of service, clinical excellence, and reliability.

It’s an exciting week celebrating our people and the work they do for you. Join us in celebrating their accomplishments!

What’s Going On?

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at your local ambulance service before the sun is fully up? Every single morning at 6:00 a.m., something important takes place right here at Crockett County Ambulance Service - and we want you to know about it.

SHIFT CHANGE - 6:00 A.M.

After 24 hours on duty, our outgoing crew passes the baton to a fresh team ready to serve you for the next 24 hours. But it’s not as simple as walking out the door and handing over the keys. Shift change is a structured, thorough process designed to make sure that when your call comes in, we are absolutely ready to respond.

THE CREW BRIEFING

The first order of business is a verbal report from the outgoing crew to the incoming crew. This briefing covers any changes in protocols or procedures, important operational updates, and any special patient concerns that may carry over from the previous shift. Nothing gets left to chance - communication between crews is critical to seamless, continuous care.

VEHICLE CHECKS

Next, our crew conducts a thorough inspection of each ambulance - checking motor oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and all other essential vehicle fluids. All emergency equipment, such as lights and sirens are checked for functionality. Our ambulances are life-saving tools. Making sure they are mechanically sound is not optional - it is a non-negotiable part of every single shift.

EQUIPMENT & SUPPLY CHECKS

Every piece of equipment and every supply on board is inspected, inventoried, and verified. Batteries are replaced as needed, and all supplies are checked to ensure nothing is expired. In emergency medicine, an out-of-date medication or a dead battery is not just an inconvenience - it can cost a life.

Our crew checks each piece of specialized equipment individually to confirm it is functioning and ready for use, including our cardiac monitor, video laryngoscope, fluid warmer, blood cooler, portable suction units, IV pump, and all other on-board medical equipment.

STATION DUTIES

A clean, organized station is a functional station. Our crew takes pride in maintaining a professional environment - the station is thoroughly cleaned and beds are made for the 24-hour shift ahead. A well-rested, well-prepared crew is a better crew, and that benefits every patient we serve.

TRAINING

Required training may be completed during each shift as well. Emergency medicine is an ever-evolving field, and our paramedics and AEMTs are committed to staying sharp. Whether it’s reviewing new protocols, practicing clinical skills, or completing continuing education requirements, training is woven into the fabric of every shift - not an afterthought.

All of this - every check, every briefing, every training exercise - happens before most of our community has finished their first cup of coffee. It happens because the people of Crockett County deserve an ambulance service that is prepared, professional, and ready at a moment’s notice.

That is our commitment to you. Every morning. Every shift. Every call.
