Staff Spotlight: Lola Garcia ✨

Sometimes the right work finds you.

For Lola Garcia, Co-Executive Director of Programs and Operations, joining the Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley wasn’t something she had planned. An organic series of connections led her to the Club, and taking the leap opened the door to something much bigger.

What keeps her here is the opportunity to grow alongside the people and communities BGCSLV serves.

“It’s the opportunity for personal and leadership growth, combined with the core values that center everything we do around hope and belonging.”

One moment that has stayed with Lola was hearing former Youth of the Year Myissa Duran share how the Club helped her find her voice, tell her story, and imagine a different future for herself.

It’s a reminder of what this work is really about.

BGCSLV is more than a place for young people to go after school. It’s a place where caring adults, relationships, and opportunities help young people discover what they’re capable of.

We’re grateful to have leaders like Lola helping make that possible every day. 💙

🎙️ Clubhouse Chats | Meet Tiana

"What makes a great teammate?"

For Tiana, the answer is simple.

"Be kind. Don't hurt people physically or emotionally. Be there for them. Support them with anything they do."

When we asked what she loves most about living in the San Luis Valley, she smiled and shared that it's the friendships she's made and the peaceful life she's found here.

Moments like these remind us that young people often understand what strong communities need better than we do.

Kindness.

Support.

A place where everyone belongs.

That's what we're building every day at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley.

💙 Thanks for chatting with us, Tiana!

Important Update for La Jara Families

Attention La Jara Elementary and Centauri Middle School families:

The Boys & Girls Club of the San Luis Valley is sharing an important operational update regarding our services for the upcoming school year. Effective immediately, we are temporarily pausing our after-school transportation route to our Alamosa Unit for students in La Jara.

Rising costs for fuel, staff time, and operations mean we must focus our resources where they have the greatest impact. To make this route financially and operationally viable in the future, we need a reliable commitment of at least 6 to 10 youth who will use the transport and actively participate in our after-school and 5th-day Friday programs at least 3 days a week.

We need your input to help bring this service back!

Whether your child previously used the route or you are interested in joining us this fall, please take 2 minutes to complete our survey. Your feedback will show us the true demand and help us rebuild a sustainable service for La Jara youth.

Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley (BGCSLV) is evaluating community interest and need for after-school programming and transportation from La Jara for youth ages 6–18. After the school bell rings, where do kids belong?

For many young people in the San Luis Valley, the answer is the Boys & Girls Clubs.

It's where homework gets finished. Where confidence grows. Where trusted mentors know every child's name. Where friendships are built, healthy meals are shared, and young people discover what they're capable of.

As another school year begins, we're asking our community to help make sure every child has access to that kind of support.

Your gift helps provide safe spaces, caring adults, leadership opportunities, academic support, healthy meals, and experiences that help young people build hope for the future.

Because every child deserves more than a place to go after school.

They deserve a place where they belong.

When young people are recognized, they begin to see themselves as leaders.

This month, several young artists were recognized by the Alamosa County Commissioners for their winning entries in the SLV Teen Prevention Coalition's Anti-Vaping Coloring Contest.

Created through a partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley's SLV Teen Prevention Coalition and Alamosa County Public Health Department, the contest invited children to use creativity to promote healthy choices.

While the artwork was inspiring, the recognition may have been even more meaningful. Standing before community leaders reminds young people that their voices matter and that they can make a positive difference in the place they call home.

At Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley, we believe prevention starts long before a difficult choice is made. It starts by helping young people build confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging.

Congratulations to all of this year's winners, and thank you to Alamosa County Public Health and the Alamosa County Commissioners for celebrating the next generation of community leaders.
