Indian boarding schools were federally mandated and funded schools specifically for native children. At these schools, native language, traditions, culture and appearance were forbidden. Many native children lived at these schools. Over 400 of these schools would operate in the United States, with five being in Michigan. This talk will look at the creation of these schools and their relation to northern Michigan. Please call to reserve your seat for this free event. 231-548-5465

Naajimiijimedaa! Let's Find Food! An introduction to foraging with bonus stories and recipes from the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians by Kathy Kae
In this presentation, the author will talk about how the food traditions of the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians in Northern Michigan have been sustained through generations of foraging in the local woods. She’ll introduce the audience to forty different wild foods—including berries, leeks, mushrooms, and wild rice—and explain what they are, where they can be found, and why they matter culturally and historically. Tribal Elder, Barbara Richmond, will be offering her famous traditional corn soup and fry bread for tasting samples!
