Statement on the Earthquake in Colombia:

“We are devastated to hear about the recent earthquake in Colombia, which has claimed the lives of so many of our brothers and sisters.

This comes on the heels of the destructive earthquake that struck Venezuela earlier this summer and is a reminder of the need for sufficient emergency response resources in our communities.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with those who have lost loved ones, those who have been displaced by this tragedy and those who are working to respond and restore.”

Statement on the Water Crisis Happening in Puerto Rico

“Access to clean, reliable water is not a luxury—it is a basic necessity and a public health imperative. This month alone, more than 140,000 Puerto Ricans have been affected by water outages, with older adults and people with disabilities bearing the greatest burden.

These repeated outages are not merely an inconvenience. They are a public health crisis and a failure of government. Decades of deferred maintenance and poor oversight have allowed Puerto Rico’s water infrastructure to deteriorate to an unacceptable level.

Deploying the National Guard and emergency water trucks may provide immediate relief, but it is not a long-term solution. Puerto Ricans cannot be expected to live from tanker to tanker. We stand with the people of Puerto Rico demanding urgency, transparency and lasting action.”

Statement on the Earthquakes in Venezuela 🇻🇪

"Our hearts are with our brothers and sisters in Venezuela who experienced a devastating earthquake yesterday evening.

Venezuela has been mired by political turmoil, instability and crisis over the last 10 years. The current state of Venezuela is especially fraught, with years of economic hardship, weakened public infrastructure, and ongoing humanitarian challenges making the response to this tragedy even more difficult.

As rescue efforts continue and families search for loved ones, we pray for those who have lost their lives, those who have been injured, and all those working tirelessly to bring relief and hope in the days ahead."
