A Statement from Eva Bass
Executive Director, AVillage Inc.
It is with profound sadness that I acknowledge the passing of Bishop McKinley Bernard Johnson, Sr. His transition is a tremendous loss, not only to the faith community but to the City of Albany and communities far beyond.
On behalf of AVillage Inc., I extend my deepest condolences to the Johnson family, the Greater St. John’s Church of God in Christ family, and the many lives Bishop Johnson touched through his faithful service and unwavering leadership.
Bishop Johnson was more than a pastor—he was a servant leader, community advocate, mentor, and a courageous voice for justice. He understood that faith was never meant to remain within the four walls of the church. He lived out the Gospel by walking alongside people, serving the oppressed, advocating for equity, and working to dismantle the systemic barriers that have long impacted marginalized communities.
For many years, Bishop Johnson stood alongside AVillage as a trusted partner and dear friend. Together, we engaged in critical conversations and actions surrounding social justice, racial equity, civic engagement, and community empowerment. He believed that the role of the church extended beyond worship services—it was to be a catalyst for transformation, hope, healing, and systemic change.
One of the many legacies he leaves behind is his dedication to preserving our history and celebrating our collective journey. Each year, Bishop Johnson faithfully led the Mississippi Day march from Greater St. John’s Church of God in Christ to Lincoln Park, honoring the legacy of the Great Migration and those whose courage, sacrifice, and resilience shaped generations to come. That annual walk was more than a tradition—it was a living reminder of where we came from, the struggles endured, and the responsibility we all share to continue pursuing justice, opportunity, and unity.
Bishop Johnson had a unique ability to bring together the church, community organizations, elected officials, and residents around a common purpose. His leadership reminded us that real change happens when faith is paired with action and when communities unite to serve one another.
His wisdom, humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to God’s people inspired countless individuals and strengthened collaborations that will continue to bear fruit for years to come. His legacy lives on in every life he encouraged, every injustice he challenged, and every community he helped strengthen.
While we grieve this tremendous loss, we also celebrate a life that was lived with purpose, conviction, and extraordinary love for God’s people.
May we honor Bishop Johnson not only with our words but by continuing the work he devoted his life to—building stronger communities, advocating for justice, preserving our history, and ensuring that faith continues to move us beyond the sanctuary and into the lives of those who need it most.
On behalf of AVillage Inc., we thank God for the gift of Bishop McKinley Bernard Johnson, Sr. His race has been well run, his work has left an indelible mark on our city, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations.
With heartfelt sympathy and gratitude,
Eva Bass
