Schuyler, the Revolutionary War Major General, US Senator, agrarian, and businessman. Located in Albany, NY, Schuyler Mansion was home to Philip J. He and his wife, Catharine Van Rensselaer, descended from affluent and powerful Dutch families. Together they raised eight children in this home. The home was built in a Georgian style, reflecting Schuyler's English tastes, on a bluff overlooking the H

udson River. Originally situated on an 80-acre tract of land, the grounds once included an orchard, formal gardens, and a working farm. Throughout the Schuyler family occupancy from 1763-1804, the mansion was the site of military strategizing, political hobnobbing, elegant social affairs, and an active family life. It was also home to more than fifty enslaved laborers, servants, and artisans over that span. From mid-May through October, visitors can enjoy guided tours of the mansion, as well as an orientation exhibition in the Visitor Center focusing on the 18th century history of the site and its inhabitants. Temporary exhibitions and public programs are scheduled year-round. Tours for school and adult groups, as well as outreach programs, are also available. All tours, public and private, are by reservation. Please call (518) 434-0834 to make a reservation.

In August of 1800, Philip Schuyler purchased an iron bound wagon from the Society of Shakers at New Lebanon. Schuyler’s purchase of the wagon is one of the earliest known receipts of purchase from this particular Shaker village, established in 1782. For this wagon he paid $75 plus a $4 delivery fee.

If someone were to mention the "best of wives and best of women," you might assume they were quoting Hamilton, referring to Eliza Schuyler, of course. But not all of the Founding Fathers would agree with you!

On August 9, 1776, Samuel Chase, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, wrote a letter to Philip Schuyler. He was leaving Congress in Philadelphia for a little while, and looking forward to seeing who he called, "the best of women & of wifes," Anne Baldwin Chase.

Mrs. Chase is shown in this portrait by Charles Wilson Peale with her daughters, Matilda Chase (right), and Anne Chase (on her lap).

On this day in 1757, Elizabeth Schuyler was born to Catharine and Philip Schuyler at Philip’s childhood home at the corner of N, Pearl St. in Albany.

Throughout her life Elizabeth was a very active person. Family friend Tench Tilghman wrote in 1775 about Elizabeth’s behavior on a visit to Cohoes Falls that she had, “been used to ramble over and climb grounds of this sort for she disdained all assistance and made herself merry at the distress of the other Ladies.”

Elizabeth went on to marry Alexander Hamilton and was instrumental in securing his legacy for the 50 years she lived after his death.
