Turning Stones: Discovering the Life of Water, a Vermont Reads Talk
April 17, 6:00 PM
Lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and even rain gutters teem with life you can easily observe. Declan McCabe, an aquatic ecologist and professor of biology at Saint Michael’s College, discusses and shares photographs of the stunning and fascinating organisms found in Vermont’s waterways. He will also be bringing live specimens for us to meet under the microscope!

This is a tie-in program for Vermont Reads The Light Pirate, available thanks to funding from Vermont Humanities.

Due to the ongoing library construction, this event will take place at the Albany Community School.

For the safety of our patrons and staff, the library is now closed through the rest of March. We will update again at the end of the month, but currently anticipate reopening in mid-April.

The Constitution reading will still happen at 5:30, but will now be in the Albany Genny!

We'll put some free seed packets on top of the free bookshelf in the Albany Genny on Friday evening as well (and the rest of the free seeds will still be available in the library when we reopen later this spring!)

Minecraft Club will NOT happen on March 14th due to safety concerns. I know that this is disappointing, and I am very sorry for the confused messaging about this event.

We look forward to seeing you all later this spring!

Community Read of the US Constitution Friday, March 13th 5:30 - 7:00 PM
When was the last time, if ever, that you read through this fundamental document?

This is an opportunity to read the US Constitution together. Everyone will be invited to take a turn being a reader, but no one is obligated to be a reader; you can also come just as a listener. Everyone is welcome; this is not a political discussion.

As we read we will be invited to think about the problems the writers were addressing. We will also ask ourselves if and how our personal lives have ever been directly impacted by the articles of the constitution.

NOTE: If the library ends up being closed for construction on this date, this event will move across the parking lot into The Albany Genny!

Construction has started elsewhere in the building, but not too much has changed in the library yet. However, the library carpet is now protected by shiny plastic that makes a crinkle-squish noise when we walk on it!

Blue tape on the ceiling is a step towards new light fixtures! And soon we will say good-bye to the exhaust pipe for the old furnace.

The sink is gone from the back room, and so is part of the wall! The hole to the furnace room will eventually become the doorway to a new ADA-compliant bathroom! Small amounts of dust from this work are sneaking into the library and affecting air quality, so if you have asthma or otherwise need to be careful of your lungs, this might not be the best week to visit.

Minecraft club today! 1:00-3:00

Albany Library's regular Minecraft club for kids is back on for March 7th!

By the end of the week, we'll hopefully know more about what the library construction timeline looks like; but we have confirmed with the project manager that the library will definitely still be available through this week!

Drop in and use the library laptops to play multiplayer Minecraft - or bring your own device to join other players on a LAN server. All skill levels welcome! Snacks provided! We have many Minecraft books ready to check out as well, including the latest release in the popular Bite-Sized Builds series.

The library & Town Hall building will be under construction soon thanks to a MERP grant. This will improve the building’s resilience and energy efficiency! However, we may be closed for much of March and April while work is underway.

The exact timeline is still being determined, but construction is expected to begin after Town Meeting Day and take about two months. We'll share exact dates here as soon as we can, but in the meantime, please consider checking the library website for updates before planning a visit! https://www.albanypubliclibraryvt.org/
