Summer and warmer weather are on the way, which means it’s time to talk about watering our trees.

Newly planted trees need about 20 gallons of water each week during their first growing season.

While some years bring enough steady rain, dry spells and extreme heat can put young trees at risk.

If it’s been a week since the last rainfall, consider:

• Running a low-pressure hose at the base of the tree for 20 minutes
• Using drip irrigation
• Installing a tree watering bag

Watering bags can be especially helpful for street trees because they slowly release water deep into the roots, reducing transplant stress and helping trees survive and thrive.

Congratulations to the City of Albany for earning its 24th Tree City USA Award!

The Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program, in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes communities that meet four key standards:

✔️ A tree board or department
✔️ A tree care ordinance
✔️ An annual investment of at least $2 per capita in community forestry
✔️ An Arbor Day observance

These standards, established in 1976, help raise awareness, set strong foundations, and celebrate progress in caring for community trees.

In addition to this achievement, Albany has also received its 10th Growth Award! This honor is given to Tree City USA communities that go above and beyond, demonstrating ongoing progress across five categories to build and sustain a strong community forestry program for the future.
