Type 2 diabetes continues to affect families throughout Georgia, but prevention begins with access, education, and support. Through the Fight for Life Family Diabetes Prevention Program, United Way of Southwest Georgia is helping connect local families with resources that promote healthier lifestyles and long-term wellness.

Eligible families in Albany, Georgia can participate in a free, family-centered program designed to support parents and children through weekly sessions, health assessments, and practical wellness education. Participants may also receive compensation during the intervention process while learning habits that encourage healthier futures together.

This partnership reflects the power of collaboration between community organizations, healthcare leaders, and families working toward measurable change across Southwest Georgia.

🌟 Program Spotlight: South GA Starz Academy! πŸ’™

This week, we're highlighting South GA Starz Academy, where Executive Director Kiva H. Brady shares how their team is making a lasting impact on children and families across our community.

From academic enrichment and literacy to boxing, fitness, social-emotional learning, music, field trips, and nutritious meals, South GA Starz Academy is committed to serving the whole child. Thanks to support from the Albany Summer Collective, grant funding, and generous community partners, nearly 100 students have been able to attend this summer program completely free of charge.

More than just a summer camp, this program provides a safe, structured environment where children can learn, grow, build confidence, and experience new opportunities that prepare them for success.

We are proud to partner with organizations like South GA Starz Academy that are investing in the future of our youth and strengthening our community every day. πŸ’™πŸ€

United Way of Southwest Georgia is proud to partner with Morehouse School of Medicine and community health leaders to help promote the Fight for Life Family Diabetes Prevention Program in Albany, Georgia. This free program is designed for African American and Black families who may be at risk for type 2 diabetes and are ready to take meaningful steps toward healthier living together.

Parents ages 18 and older with children ages 8–15 may qualify to participate. Families selected for the program will receive education on healthy lifestyle habits, family-centered support, wellness resources, and compensation for participation during the intervention period. Participants will also attend weekly family sessions and health assessments designed to encourage lasting change and healthier futures.
