Our two winners in this year’s Oregon Mayors Association “If I Were Mayor” student contest were joined at last night’s City Council meeting by the 13 members of our 2nd Annual Civic Academy cohort.

Our younger “Mayors” shared their entries with Council and their vision for Albany and our Civic Academy graduates shared their class project on ways the city can engage residents earlier and more meaningfully in decision making. (Look for many of their suggestions to become reality down the road.)

We want to recognize these residents of all ages, and from different backgrounds and parts of the city, for taking an active role in connecting to our community. Congratulations to Alex, Addie, Jason, Ruth, Brandon, Lonna, Trista, Jasmine, Lesly, Keith, Alicen, Emilee, Coral, Mojdeh, and Alicia!

Linn County and Legacy Contracting, Inc. have announced that work will begin on June 15 to replace the existing bridge on Waverly Drive over Cox Creek near the city limits of Albany and Millersburg. The new bridge will have one 110-foot-long span over the creek and foundations protected against stream scour. The new bridge will be constructed one half at a time, allowing traffic to access Simpson Timber property, Talking Waters Gardens, and the railroad to access their yard during construction. One lane will remain open to vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles during construction, with delays of up to 20 minutes to cross the bridge. Bridge foundation construction is expected to begin in July and will include pile driving, which produces very loud sounds.

It is our most popular summer reading program each year, Big City Trucks! Stop by the Main library back parking lot to check out cool vehicles from the city. In past years, we've had a cherry picker, bulldozer, and street sweeper. Last year we also had a city bus, and it was fantastic. It will be a surprise what we get this year. The trucks will be here on June 12, from 10-11:30 a.m.

If you haven't already signed up for Summer Reading, you can do that too at the same time.

Thanks for the update Albany Parks & Recreation! We’re just going to have to wait a little while longer to put the lazy in lazy river.

UPDATE: The date below has been changed from the 26th to the 27th to allow an extra day for on-site staff training.

As summer gets rolling, we wanted to share some updates about COOL! Pool.

This spring, our Facilities Maintenance team has been hard at work completing a number of repairs and restorations including patching cracks and holes in the plaster, replacing tiles along the pool's edges, installing a new boiler, replacing some of the pool lights, patching and waxing the slide, and much more.

The tricky part about working on a pool of this size is having to squeeze the majority of that work in between the end of spring rains and the start of summer. Unfortunately, rain in next week's forecast has thrown off part of the scheduled updates. In order to prevent plaster repairs year after year, this summer we are applying an epoxy paint to the surface of the pool which should drastically change the amount of maintenance required for the 20-year-old plaster in the offseasons. The epoxy was originally scheduled to go down early next week but, due to the weather, will have to be pushed out.

Because of that unfortunate schedule change, we will have to push the opening date of COOL! Pool to June 27th. We wish we didn't have to make this change, but we can't wait to get this work completed and share another fun summer at COOL! Pool with everyone!
