Ma*****na plants have a very distinct and strong smell....imagine 2800 pounds of it in one U-Haul truck.
On November 3rd, 2021 a detective from our Linn Interagency Narcotics Enforcement (LINE) team was following a U-Haul truck south on I-5 and noticed the scent was practically a flavor.
He coordinated with other law enforcement and arranged for the U-Haul to be stopped and checked out. The occupants claimed they were hauling furniture and the smell was possibly from the driver's T-shirt that needed washed.
The truck was opened and 2800 pounds of black-market ma*****na in 173 large black garbage bags, with an estimated street value of 2.2 million dollars was seized. The occupants, Vidal Gonzales-Tetlctle, 31 years old from Hermiston, Or and Jose Guadalupe-Alatorre, 20 years old from Redway, Ca were both charged with Unlawful Possession and Delivery of Ma*****na and Criminal Conspiracy and lodged at the Linn County Jail.
In 2015 Linn County was designated as a HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) County and the LINE team was established to dismantle large scale drug trafficking organizations in our area. When the LINE Task Force investigates ma*****na-related crime, they focus on the big picture, which includes money laundering, racketeering or other greed related criminal conduct. Often, money made from large scale black market ma*****na operations in Oregon are linked to more serious crimes all over the country and internationally, including gang and cartel-related violence and Human Trafficking.
