Hot, smoky conditions are expected today (7/14) and tomorrow (7/15). Smoke will be at its highest concentrations tomorrow afternoon and evening. Due to heat and potentially reduced air quality, limiting time outdoors is recommended.

For pretty much all of New York City, the "coolest" it's felt over the last 24 hours is about 90°F.

Hot daytime temperatures draw most of the attention, but the nighttime temperatures can hurt those without AC most because warm overnight temperatures don't allow their bodies to recover. Unfortunately, the next 24 hours will probably be quite similar to the last 24 hours.

Did it feel hot yesterday afternoon to you? The feels like temperature was in the mid-80s for most parts of NY.

During parts of Wednesday-Saturday, it may feel as much as 20°F warmer! Peak feels like temperatures (also called "heat indices") will be 100-110°F for many NYers.

Did you know that heat kills more annually than other types of weather?

There are now over 19 *million* New Yorkers under a National Weather Service Extreme Heat Watch (maroon), including 900,000+ seniors living alone - and many don't have air conditioning. Later this week is a great time to check in on your loved ones. Heat is expected to peak between Wednesday and Saturday.

A significant heatwave will impact NY this week, likely peaking Wednesday-Friday. Heat indices will be over 100F for some, with little overnight relief. For example, currently the NWS HeatRisk product suggests about half the state's population will be under the highest category of risk on Thursday.

Today marks the first day of 2026 that a New York State Mesonet station has reached 90F or greater, with numerous stations reaching this threshold. Furthermore, tomorrow looks just as warm. Approximately one in three NYers are under a "Major" risk-level in the NWS HeatRisk product. Early season heat is often more impactful because our bodies have not yet acclimated to summertime weather.
