Fall Mountain Trail, Quarry Trail, and the Kron House will be closed March 20.
An 800-acre prescribed burn is planned for Morrow Mountain State Park in Stanly County Friday, March 20, weather permitting. N.C. Forest Service personnel will lead the operation with support from N.C. State Parks. An NCFS helicopter is also assigned to the burn.
The burn objective is to reduce hazardous fuels as previous wildfires in the park have been difficult to contain due to steep and rugged terrain.
Smoke is expected to carry northeast of the park through the Uwharrie community and toward areas south of Asheboro. Smoke may be visible on the day of the burn with the smell of smoke possibly present for days following the burn.
Prescribed fire is the carefully planned use of fire under strict, predetermined weather and fuel parameters to obtain specific management objectives. This critical tool remains one of the most efficient and cost-effective forest management practices, helping North Carolina forests remain healthy and thrive. Prescribed fire improves overall health of the forest and wildlife habitat while consuming vegetative fuels to reduce wildfire risk.
