Happy (almost) New Year!

With the new year, MLK Day weekend is around the corner and we have a full weekend of service projects planned.

One of our service projects will include making welcome kits for women and children staying at the Esther House - our region’s Domestic Violence Shelter.

Each kit will include luggage (since many of the families arrive in emergency situations with their belongings in trash bags), along with toiletry bags and kits, and journals. We’ve already collected some items, but if you’re able, we’ve put together a wish list of supplies that are still needed.

The United Way of Stanly County is a 501(c)3 organization and donations are tax deductible, and greatly appreciated!

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, or other ideas for items that we could include in the welcome bags, so that women and children in need of safe, secure housing recieve a warm welcome gift from the community when they arrive at the shelter.

Please feel free to share the link with friends and community group pages!

We’ve started distributing our annual school supply donation bins to benefit students, families, and teachers throughout Stanly County Schools. We’re nearly a month early and we have twice as many bins ready to distribute!

This year, we’ve included a list of school supplies, classroom supplies for teachers, as well as essential home needs for students in the district and their families. We’re greatly expanding our reach this year from about 25 bins to more than 60, to provide supplies to classrooms at the beginning of the year, as well as help fill the Stanly County Schools new K-12 resource room, where guidance counselors and teachers can access supplies year-round, and pick-up resources about non-profit organizations in Stanly County that provide wrap-around services to help students and families in crisis.

If you are a local business, church, or community center and would like to host a school supply bin, please contact Executive Director Kelly Misiak at [email protected] or call (980) 234-5506.

This week we’re replacing and expanding the garden beds at the YMCA and creating a new Children’s Outdoor Adventure Learning Garden. Summer Camp and After-School campers from the YMCA will be planting and caring for the gardens, and they will also participating in weekly STEM outdoor adventure activities. Additionally, the United Way is sponsoring Family Outdoor Adventure kits available for check-out at the front desk of the YMCA, so that you can create your own kid-friendly outdoor adventure experience.
