35 Albert Lea businesses pass compliance checks

On Nov. 28 the Albert Lea Police Department conducted its most recent wave of to***co and alcohol compliance checks throughout the city. Officers supervised decoys under age 21 who attempted to purchase to***co and alcohol products in 39 establishments, resulting in three violations. Employees of Green Mill, Skyline Liquor and Korner Mart conducted illegal sales. Police issued a warning to one additional establishment for an inoperable driverโ€™s license reader.

To help prevent illegal sales to people under age 21, both the State of Minnesota provisional driverโ€™s license and instructional permit show the date the holder turns age 18. In addition, licenses for drivers under age 21 use a vertical layout with a notation of โ€œUNDER 21 until # #/ # #/ # # # #.โ€ Licenses for drivers older than 21 use a horizontal layout.

A 1997 Minnesota state law requires law enforcement to conduct to***co compliance checks at least once per year. Retail clerks who sell to***co to minors receive a summons to court for the first violation, which carries a maximum penalty of not more than 90 days in jail and a fine of not more than $1,000. A second violation by the same clerk within a 5-year period is a gross misdemeanor violation. Businesses that fail to***co compliance checks can receive administrative penalties of up to $250 and a 7-day suspension of their to***co licenses.

Retail clerks who sell alcohol to those under age 21 receive a summons to court and are charged with a gross misdemeanor. In addition, the establishment is subject to having its alcohol license suspended. Continued violations may result in license revocation.

Employees and owners of establishments alcohol licenses are encouraged to attend the โ€œUnderage Access to Alcohol Serverโ€ training with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division hosted by the Albert Lea Police Department. The most recent server training was held July 25, 2023.

๐Ÿ“ป ALPD Special Policeman Judson Randall (EOW 11-06-1899) was recently featured on the Officer Down Memorial Podcast.

THE JUDSON RANDALL STORY
EOW - Nov 6th, 1899

Judson Randall moved to Freeborn County after serving as the youngest soldier in Company D, 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry during the Civil War. He married Nancy Wiggins and they settled in Freeborn County MN. Judson became a successful wheat buyer and served part-time as a special policeman when the local Albert Lea chief needed extra help. During this time smallpox was the latest silent killer bringing fear to Americans. There were already over 1000 documented cases in MN with 28 deaths in the region. Law Enforcement became involved in helping assist health authorities, and an altercation and assault over the quarantining of an infected citizen ended in the death of this local hero and war veteran.

ALBERT LEA, MN- On September 20th, 2023 at approximately 9:49AM, ALPD officers were dispatched to a traffic crash on Harriet Lane. Initial information was that the vehicle involved in the crash was in Fountain Lake.

Upon arrival, officers observed a pick-up truck sinking approximately thirty feet off the shore. Two good Samaritans were in the area on a boat and heard the crash. One of the parties entered the lake and was able to remove the driver out of the pick-up truck and bring him to shore. The driver, Dwight Martin Weise (85) of Blue Earth, MN was uninjured and checked out by Mayo Ambulance paramedics on scene.

ALPD and Albert Lea Fire Rescue personnel remained on scene until the pick-up truck was removed from the lake.

It is believed that Weise was traveling west on Harriet Lane, struck a retaining wall of a private residence, and entered the lake. Harriet Lane is small residential road that contains no outlets to other roads. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.

It was found on the hood of their vehicle but they did not know exactly what location it could have been placed during travels. Possible locations would be Shoe Sensation (near Walmart), or Taco Johnโ€™s. If you are missing a coin purse and can describe it & approximate contents, please contact our office.
