The coming week will be bringing lots of activity in the downtown area. There will be a concert on the square on Thursday the 27th of August followed by Restoration Days activities and of course the Parade on Saturday.
With all of these things come the necessary street closures. We will be closing the intersection of Benton Ave and Clinton Street starting on Wednesday afternoon to allow for the construction of the stage for the Thursday concert. It will remain closed until the end of the Restoration Days activities late Saturday afternoon.
If you regularly park inside the area indicated in the map below, please be sure you have your vehicle moved out of that area by 5:00 PM on Wednesday. Vehicles remaining inside this area after that time will be impounded and removed.

As the end of the summer closes in, there appears to be a need for a refresher on ATV/UTV/GOLF CART operations withing the city.
Albia Ordinance # 880 includes the following restrictions:
1) You must be at least 18 years old and a licensed driver to operate an ATV/UTV/GOLF CART in Albia.
2) Operation can only be from 1 hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, or 10PM, whichever comes first.
3) You cannot operate these vehicles on STATE HIGHWAYS (Hwy 34 or Hwy 5)
4) You must have all equipment outlined in Iowa Code 321.I12 to operate. (SAFETY EQUIPMENT)
5) You must have adequate exhaust noise reduction.
6) You must have an orange flag which extends at least 2 feet above the highest point on the vehicle.
7) You must have a slow moving vehicle plaque affixed to the rear.
8) You must have liability insurance as required by Iowa Code.
9) It must display a current City of Albia permit sticker (Issued after inspection by the Police Department.)
10) You must adhere to ALL traffic signs and signals.
11) WHEN TRANSPORTING CHILDREN, THEY MUST BE SECURED WITH AT LEAST A LAP BELT.
12) You must not operate on streets with a posted speed limit of greater than 30 miles per hour.
13) You cannot operate on recreational bike or walking trails or sidewalks.
VIOLATION OF THESE RULES CAN RESULT IN A SIMPLE MISDEMEANOR CITATION.

We will try and remind you of all this next spring as well!

Beginning Tuesday August 4th, 2026 the Sewer Department will be involved in Lining and Rehab of sewer lines in the area south of Benton Ave between 13th Street and the Appanoose County Rail Company railroad line that goes from North to South through the eastern end of the city. Streets effected will be Washington, 2nd and 3rd.
If you live in this area, please lower the lids on your toilets in this area during daylight hours. There have been some complaints that air backflow from this procedure can cause the toilets to "burp" air pockets up the line and, if the lids are not down, some water can be expelled onto the floor.
Lowering the lids will minimize this possibility.
This work will be going on for the next few days.
