As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, remember that fire safety doesn’t end when the week is over. The habits we practice every day can prevent fires, protect our families, and save lives.

⚡ Prevent electrical fires by checking cords, outlets, and appliances.

🏠 HAVE AN ESCAPE PLAN — KNOW TWO WAYS OUT!

When a fire starts, there may only be minutes—or even seconds—to escape safely. A practiced home fire escape plan helps everyone know exactly what to do when every second counts.

🚪 Know two ways out — Identify at least two exits from every room whenever possible.

🗺️ Make a plan — Draw a simple map of your home showing exits and escape routes that lead outside.

🌳 Choose a meeting place — Pick a safe location outside, such as a tree, mailbox, or neighbor’s driveway, where everyone will meet.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Practice your escape — Conduct home fire drills so everyone knows how to get out quickly.

🚫 Once you’re out, stay out — Never go back inside a burning building.

📞 Call 911 from outside — Get to your meeting place, account for everyone, and call for help.

🌲 OUTDOOR FIRE SAFETY — KEEP THE FLAMES UNDER CONTROL!

Cool fall evenings are perfect for campfires, fire pits, and spending time outdoors, but even a small fire can quickly get out of control. Whether you’re enjoying a backyard fire or gathering around a campfire, make fire safety part of the plan.

🔥 Keep your distance — Place fires a safe distance from homes, garages, decks, trees, and anything that can burn.

🪵 Use approved fire pits or rings — Keep fires contained and manageable.

🍂 Clear the area — Remove dry leaves, grass, brush, and other combustible materials.

💧 Keep water nearby — Always have a hose, bucket of water, or other means of extinguishment ready.

💨 Check the wind — Avoid burning during windy or extremely dry conditions.

🚫 Never leave a fire unattended — An adult should remain with the fire at all times.

💦 Put it out completely — Drown the fire, stir the ashes, and make sure everything is cool before leaving.

🔥 PREVENT ELECTRICAL FIRES — CHECK IT BEFORE YOU CONNECT IT!

Electrical fires can happen quickly, but many can be prevented by recognizing warning signs and using electrical equipment safely. Take a few minutes today to check the outlets, cords, appliances, and electrical devices throughout your home.

🔌 Avoid overloading outlets — Don’t plug too many high-wattage appliances into one outlet.

⚡ Inspect cords regularly — Replace frayed, cracked, pinched, or damaged cords.

🛡️ Use surge protectors properly — Never use extension cords or power strips as permanent wiring.

🔥 Give space heaters space — Keep them at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.

💡 Use the correct bulbs — Follow the recommended wattage for lamps and light fixtures.

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but cooking can quickly become dangerous when left unattended. Whether you’re frying, grilling, baking, or simmering, stay alert and keep your attention on what’s cooking.

👀 Stay attentive — Never leave cooking unattended.

🔥 Keep a clear area — Keep towels, oven mitts, paper products, and other items that can burn away from the stove.

🍳 Use the right burner — Match your pan to the burner and turn handles inward so they can’t be bumped.

⏰ Set a timer — Use a timer so you don’t forget something is cooking.

Noble Township Fire Department members recently completed specialized training on responding to anhydrous ammonia emergencies. The training covered the hazards associated with anhydrous ammonia releases, recognizing and monitoring chemical plumes, establishing isolation zones, and evaluating evacuation and shelter-in-place considerations.

Members also reviewed medical treatment priorities for individuals exposed to anhydrous ammonia, including rapid assessment, removal from the contaminated area, decontamination, respiratory support, and coordination with emergency medical services. Mitigation strategies included leak control, defensive operations, air monitoring, protective equipment, incident command, and coordination with other response agencies.

This training strengthens the department’s ability to protect residents, support agricultural and industrial partners, and respond safely and effectively to hazardous-material incidents throughout Noble Township.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the families forever changed on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, the courage and sacrifice demonstrated that day remain deeply rooted in the fire service. 343 FDNY firefighters, along with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and countless civilians, showed the world what it means to serve others in the face of unimaginable danger.

For those of us who wear the uniform today, 9/11 is more than a moment in history—it is a reminder of the responsibility we carry. We honor those who climbed the stairs while others were coming down, those who rushed toward danger, and those who gave everything in service to others.

The members of Noble Township Fire Department stand together in remembrance.
