Save the Date and join us at Bullard Park on Sept. 26th at 9am to begin a morning of cleaning our local waterways around the county for our Annual Shoreline Cleanup. This event coincides with the American Littoral Society's Coastal Cleanup Day allowing us to present community service hours to our volunteers. We hope to see you there!

This week, June 22-28, we are taking time to appreciate the approx. 200,000 species of pollinators! The theme for this year is Swallowtail butterflies, North America's largest butterfly is the Giant Swallowtail. Approx. 1 in every 3 bites of food are provided by pollinators. During this time, it's important that we take extra special care of pollinator friendly native plants including: milkw**d species (butterfly, swamp, common), Joe Pye w**d, Wild bergamot, New England aster, black-eyed Susan, and Red combine. In honor of New York’s Invasive Species Awareness Week our office wanted to share two re-occurring projects conducted in the field season. First at Holley Falls, we released 3 life stages of Hypena opulenta into a cage with the invasive Pale Swallow-wort. The goal during this monitoring is to observe defoliation of the swallow-wort by the hypena so it can serve as a form of biocontrol. This would eliminate the need for herbicide in the understory. Then, across the county our staff has set up Spotted Lanternfly, SLF, traps. These traps are placed in most towns and will be checked weekly for any stage of SLF with the hopes of catching them before invasion into the county occurs. If you happen to spot any of our traps or the monitoring cage, feel free to read the associated project information near the site but refrain from touching or altering them as this will negatively impact our data collection. 🎣 Practice your skills with our backyard bass casting game
🌎 Meet local environmental partners and take part in hands-on activities

🍿 Grab a bite from food trucks including More Than A Mouthful and Papa's Popcorn
🌿 And don’t forget to explore! Spring is one of the best times to experience the trails and overlooks throughout the refuge, as well as nearby adventures at the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area and Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area.
🚗Pleas drive slow! Public Parking is available in our maintenance gravel lot to the left of the Visitor Center or along Casey Road. Accessible parking is available along the driveway leading up to the Visitor Center or along the tree-line in the maintenance lot.
