Days and nights are both getting warmer, so it’s time to start direct-sowing some hardy spring plants. Try peas, carrots, beets, or greens such as spinach or chicories. If you have a way to cover these fragile seedlings, this can help defend them from pests as they get established. Floating row covers are a good option.

With warm temperatures following last week’s moisture, many perennials, such as mints, herbs, and wildflowers, are starting to pop out in Albuquerque. Take advantage of softened soils and early growth to clear areas for spring planting by pulling out dead growth and unwanted plants. It’s also (always) a great time to add organic mulch or compost. #byfbuzz #springiscoming #herbgardens #springchores

Last week saw record cold temperatures across New Mexico and North America! Did you know that some plants need a cold period in order to germinate, including many perennial flowers, such as lavender, some sunflowers, and coneflowers. In order to grow these flowers from seed, plant in the fall, or treat them to some freezer time before sowing, a process known as scarification. #byfbuzz #themoreyouknow #coldhardyplants #scarification #brrrrr

February is still chilly, but growing season will be on us soon! Now is a great time to order seeds if you want to start your plants indoors. Renewed interest in growing food at home this year means seeds may take longer to arrive or you may need to order a new variety or even try out a new veggie if your favorites are out-of-stock. Take the time to read about new varieties and make a garden plan now! #BYFbuzz #growyourownfood #seedstarting #heritageseeds

Pruning houseplants helps encourage healthy, dense growth and allows you to keep plants to a size that works for you. Cut back any areas with dead or unhealthy growth or where plants get “leggy,” meaning they have long stems between leaves or branches. Many plants will branch out below the cut, creating a denser plant. You can root or plant many cuttings, including such popular houseplants as succulents, geraniums, or spiderworts. #loveyourplants #BYFbuzz #houseplantcare #plantpropagation

Repotting houseplants is an important part of good plant care, providing room for growth, fresh, nutrient-packed soil, and a chance to cut off dead roots and growth. Do some research to find out how often different kinds of plants like to be moved. Many houseplants prefer to grow into a pot for a few years and might not bloom if they are transplanted too often. #BYFbuzz #roomtogrow #plantcare #winterchores

Did you know that your houseplants need a bath every so often for optimal health? Winter is a great time to clean your plants. Spray them gently with water or brush them off softly with a microfiber cloth. Cleaning removes dust from leaves that can interfere with photosynthesis and transpiration. Let your plants dry outside of direct sunlight to avoid burning leaves. #BYFbuzz #innergreen #plantsmakepeoplehappy
