Do you have issues with compacted clay soils in parts of your garden? Take advantage of the natural power of the daikon radish (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) -- or tillage radish -- to open up and fertilize your soil while you rest for the winter. Plant daikon radishes now, and allow them to grow and develop large roots that drill down into heavy clay over the winter. Leaving the radishes in the ground to decay in the spring adds an extra boost of nutrition to your soil. They can also be harvested for a tasty treat! #BYFbuzz

Yesterday was the fall equinox! Days are only getting shorter from now until late December. Now that summer is behind us, it’s time to dig up and divide spring-blooming perennials like iris or lilies. Trade varieties with friends to diversify your blooms for free, or replant in a new area of your garden. Check to see if your bulbs are winter-hardy and can be left in the ground or if they are more tender and need to overwinter in a cool, dry space. #BYFbuzz

Backyard Farming buzz is here a day early this week because we’re expecting a sudden drop in temperatures tonight! If you have sensitive plants in exposed areas, consider helping them through the shock of the first cold nights by covering them with a tarp or even a box or old quilt. Tomatoes, peppers, and succulents are good candidates.

September brings cooler temperatures and less evaporation, so it is time to cut back on landscape irrigation. Carlos Bustos, conservation program manager for the Water Authority provides this week's tip and a great resource to follow, sign up for the newsletter, and learn more about water smart gardening and landscaping in Albuquerque: “Follow the Water by the Numbers program, and cut back on watering turf to two days per week. For other plants and trees, check the detailed watering recommendations at www.505Outside.com.” Follow this series at #BYFbuzz

Summer blooms have faded, leaving behind seedheads on plants such as larkspurs, poppies, bachelor buttons, hollyhock, Rocky Mountain Penstemon, and Rudbeckia. Collect seeds from your yard and organize a seed swap with other gardeners to diversify the pollinator-friendly blossoms you can plant this fall.

Plant fast-growing herbs like basil, dill, cilantro, and parsley as the weather cools off. High temperatures encourage early flowering (“bolting”), changing the flavor and quality of herbs. New Mexico's mild fall leaves plenty of time for a second harvest before first frost. If you don’t have an outdoor garden, these plants do well in containers on a patio or a sunny window.

Fast-growing varieties of winter squash only need about 75-85 days to mature, so there’s still time this week to plant these beautiful and delicious crops for you to enjoy all winter. The ends of beds or rows are a great spot for sprawling squashes.

Some fast-growing varieties to try are Gold Nugget butternut, Ponca butternut, Table King acorn and the less common Sweet Dumpling squash.

For kids (young and old!): A journal will help you remember and understand changes in your garden. This month, learn more about the wildlife your garden or yard attracts. Go outside every day for a few minutes and see how many bugs or birds you can see. Maybe identify pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. You could also make notes about where you see these garden visitors. Are they in a plant, on the ground, buzzing by? Share a picture of your observation journal!
