NAMI attended the City of Albuquerque Veteran’s Day Ceremony at the New Mexico Veteran’s Memorial today. If you have never been to the memorial, we encourage you to go. It is beautiful and humbling. Mental health conditions are prevalent within the Veteran community and the su***de statistics are alarming. New Mexico itself has one of the highest su***de rates. Reach out to a Veteran and let them know they are not alone. Refer them to NAMI for resources and let them know about the Veterans Crisis Line. Lastly, educate yourself about mental health so that you can be aware of the signs and symptoms, and can know when to help someone in need.

I have depression. I'm fighting the stigma against men's mental health

Stand up to stigma.

I live with depression, and across my life, I have been through a rollercoaster of emotions. I have chased a sense of belonging — a feeling that desires to be truly wanted. Likewise, I am telling my story to shed light on the lack of attention on men’s mental health.

Imagining what it is like to live with a mental illness is often beyond those who have not experienced the symptoms. Empowering those with a mental illness is not so much about relating to somebodies experience, but rather understanding that they are having an experience that you may not be able to relate to. There is a distinct difference between sympathy and empathy.

What is something you were told about mental illness that wasn't true?

10/18/2022

Mental health conditions aren't "simple things" that people can get over. This is why education, understanding and empathy are needed to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health.
