☀️ It’s HOT out there and the water is calling – but before you hit the beach, pool or lake, brush up on water safety tips!

➡️ Swim as a pair with a lifeguard there
➡️ Don’t just pack it, wear your life jacket
➡️ Reach or throw, don’t go in after someone in trouble

This summer, we’d also like to thank for inviting customers to donate online and in-store to support our Aquatics Centennial Campaign to help make the water a safer place for everyone. We appreciate you standing with us to make an impact in communities with high drowning rates!

⛑️ 🐕 Huge shout out to Chris and the team with the Ruidoso Humane Society for supporting the animals at the White Mountain Relief Center and in the community!

When Chris saw the evacuation order, she loaded her car and immediately went to the humane society. There, with other workers and community members, she evacuated all the animals at the Humane Society to a safer location.

Now, weeks later, she is providing residents with pet food, leashes, crates, and more, helping those who lost everything in the wildfire.

Thank you for your help, Chris and everyone else at the Humane Society!

⛑️ Meet Stephanie and Teresa, two Ruidoso residents who jumped in to help their community after deadly wildfires devastated Ruidoso, NM.

“When I saw the fires break out, I immediately went to the Red Cross website and signed up to be a volunteer,” said Stephanie, a longtime Ruidoso resident and social worker. “I knew I had the skills to help those who may need it.”

Teresa and Stephanie are no strangers to helping their community. Stephanie is a local social worker and Teresa is an active member of her church, where her husband is the pastor. Now, they are the friendly faces that greet community members looking for food, shelter, and other resources available to help them get back on their feet.

We are grateful for the community members who have eagerly raised their hand and volunteered to assist. If you are interested in becoming a Red Cross volunteer, head to the White Mountain Recreation Complex and talk to someone wearing a Red Cross vest! You can also visit redcross.org/volunteer for more information.

06/25/2024

When Dianna received an alert to evacuate due to a fast-moving wildfire, she did not have time to grab much. She hopped in her car with her family, which included her 39-year-old bird, Luke.

"I don't know what I would have done if the Red Cross didn't let pets into their shelter. I probably would have just stayed in my car with the AC on until I ran out of gas," says Dianne.

For many, pets are part of the family. Our volunteers strive to ensure every pet has what they need to be comfortable.

"The Red Cross volunteer was so kind when she saw me with Luke. She asked his name and put him on the list of residents staying at the shelter. The little kids at the shelter love to say 'hi' to him."

Pets are always welcome at Red Cross shelters. If you have been affected by the New Mexico wildfires, go to redcross.org/shelter or call 1-800-RED-CROSS to find a shelter near you.
