VC investments in space rise during the pandemic

Space Capital’s second quarter investment report found venture capital funding in space companies was actually up 4% during the first half of 2020 compared to the same time in 2019.

Developing space capabilities is a long-term gain with short-term urgency. We appreciate that investors see the bright future in space that we will do our part to protect.

I am excited to announce that Technical Sergeant Orly Lujan was selected by the Air Force Central Selection Board for promotion to Master Sergeant. This was Sergeant Lujan’s first year of eligibility for promotion, and his selection validates what we know already – he is a very sharp Airman! The Air Force promotion rates for E-7 dropped from 24% to 20% this year, and his line number of #3881 of the 4649 selected validates that SpRCO has one of the best in his field! Congratulations to MSgt (sel) Orly Lujan and his family! — Mike Roberts, SpRCO Director

I was thrilled to be able to recognize two of our outstanding employees the other day, even if it was a little different being in front of a masked and socially distanced audience. That didn’t take away from the pride in recognizing Ms. Pearl Solano for SpRCO’s Senior Civilian of the Quarter and Lt Col Phil Swenson for the Team Kirtland & SpRCO Field Grade Officer of the Quarter. Well done! – Mike Roberts, Director SpRCO

Op-ed | To deter attacks on satellites, U.S. needs a strategy to identify bad actors - SpaceNews.com

This article discusses the growing importance of attribution in space, but an underlying message of interest to the us is the growth in the fundamental importance of partnerships. Whether discussing integrated Space Domain Awareness architectures that blend US Govt, commercial and International, or about collaboratively sharing satellite data from friendly satellite operators, clearly the days of stovepiped systems and missions are over.

Space Force, Services Struggle To Define Mission Boundaries

Although the outset of any new military service in a relatively nascent domain involves tough questions like determining what stays or goes from the other Services, the United States Space Force is taking a smart and mindful approach. No doubt learning lessons from the Air Force splitting from the Army, we applaud their “do no harm” approach. Regardless of what does or doesn’t come over to the Space Force, SpRCO will stay focused on rapidly delivering space capabilities to the Space Force, for the Warfighter.

"We can't break the US Air Force, we can't break the Army, we can't break the Navy," said Lt. Gen. David Thompson, Space Force vice commander.

Our Story

The Space Rapid Capabilities Office (SpRCO) was born out of the 2018 National Defense Strategy, which noted that legacy acquisition processes were over-optimized for exceptional performance at the expense of providing timely capabilities to the warfighter. Thus, the SpRCO was stood up by law in the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act and the Operationally Responsive Space Office was stood down. Leveraging the mindset, processes, streamlined structure and oversight mechanisms of the Department of the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office model, and by maximizing partnerships across the Space Enterprise, the SpRCO is rapidly executing multiple space lines of effort filling critical gaps for the nation.
