This week’s is the Bullock’s Oriole!

In honor of Migratory Bird Day on May 13th, we’re featuring one of our many Spring Migrant birds—the Bullock’s Oriole. This robin-sized orange, yellow and black bird should be flying into town to find a mate and have a family soon, as the western United States is prime breeding territory for this continental traveler. Males are easily identified by their bright orange body, black back, and black and white wings. Females are a lot more subdued, having a dull orange head and tail with a creamy belly and greyish back.

Bullock’s Orioles are omnivorous, but favor insects and berries in particular. Orioles, including the Bullock’s, are named for the latin word aureolus, meaning ‘golden’ or ‘the color of gold’.

Bullock’s Orioles are the most spotted Oriole species in the Duke City, although they are not the only oriole species to pay us a visit each year. all over the city foraging in shrubs and trees in search of their next snack!

We kick off this year's collaboration with the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division tomorrow with the first Nature Festival and Block Party in the west side's Tower Pond Park. This will be the first of 4 Nature Fests and 4 free evening concerts.

Every week features a fun mix of actives, the Conservation Carnivale nature circus and live music, this week from the New Mexican Marimba Band.

Give your kiddo a screen break!

This elementary-aged youth program at the Open Space Visitor Center includes hiking and outdoor exploration, hands-on science, literacy, and art activities. Different themes take place each session. Child should attend camp prepared to explore the outdoors. Program taught by two Open Space Educators.

May 13 Camp: Powerful Pollinators!

Campers will learn to love the insects of New Mexico by investigating one of the most important roles they have: pollination! The day will begin will a pollinator race illustrating each step of the pollination process. Then we'll dissect a flower, create a unique pollinator, learn how to plant a pollinator-friendly plant, and more!

$10 per child

Do you know how to ride a bike but never tried mountain biking? Curious to explore what it’s like riding off road and getting out into nature?

Albuquerque has a great network of trails on the west mesa, in the Rio Grande bosque, and along the Sandia foothills. Join us with City of Albuquerque Esperanza bike crew for a fun and supportive two-part class that will introduce you to the basic skills, gear, and safety of this popular sport. Mountain bike and helmet provided. You are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Two-part class is limited to six adults, must attend both parts. Registration required at play.cabq.gov.

Registration closes on May 10 at 11:59pm. (Open Space → Public Programs → Adult Programs → Intro to the Outdoors → Learn to Ride a Mountain Bike) More class information provided after registration.

May 12th: 5:30pm-7:30pm Bike Fitting and Basic Skills
