Thank you for joining us tonight!

It was a very close election-- but despite all the technical issues and even a back-up vote, and a recount, we were able to collectively determine the next members of our board from the results. All of our candidates were super amazing, but ultimately the people chose who they want to serve.

Welcome your new SWOP Board Members:
Amanda Gutierrez-Lopez
Charrnessa Tidwell
Ingrid K Ordóñez
Janelle Astorga Ramos

Congratulations you all! We look forward to working together to make a better organization, and community.

And we promise, next time, we will remember to take an actual group photo together!

Hasta la Victoria Siempre! ❤️🌟✊🏾

Here are the responses from another candidate running for the board this year, Franklin Gauna!

Did you find SWOP or did SWOP find you?

"SWOP found me in 1988 I'm the nephew of Jeanne Gauna I grow up in the organization I was one of the one of the first youth interns swop ever had in the early to 2000."

What do you think are SWOP’s strengths?

"I think one of Southwest Organizing Project strength's in the community is uplifting their membership to fight & strengthening the community of color Albuquerque, and throughout the Southwest part of the state. Another one of SWOP's strength is holding public officials accountable for their responsibilities what they say they're going to do when running for office."

What are SWOP weakness you could help strengthen as a board member?

"SWOP has lot of weaknesses, that they either don't know how to solve or don't want to solve but as a board member I think I have the unique ability to know the organization in a way that could solve or begin to solve the problems that they are weakest in!"

Did you find SWOP or did SWOP find you?

"I was told about SWOP through my friend Yarida Estrada"

What do you think are SWOP’s strengths?

"I think from working with SWOP the strengths are the openness to reinventing how we talk about ways of changing our community through cultural strenghths. such as something like Art."

What are SWOP weakness you could help strengthen as a board member?

"I think I can help improve different areas in SWOP but one I would like to focus on is. How do we engage with youth in middle school and high school to make sure they are aware of not only their rights but also how they can use the skills they are given to be a voice."

If you were something you would find at Project Feed the hood Garden what would you be?

"Red Chile ha Red chile is so simple but people always want to complicate it. Being simple, yet creative, you're able to focus on the important parts. In case of red chile, the flavor, the sweetness. It only needs salt and garlic. Simple."

Our next candidate running for the Board tomorrow is Felicia Mason! The featured image is of Felicia in our community garden!

Did you find SWOP or did SWOP find you?

"Southwest Organizing Project and I found each other. I was looking for them to inquire about their status with their garden and they were looking for someone local in the community to be its voice."

What do you think are SWOP’s strengths?

"With SWOP being one of the largest non profits in our state is network and reach can be great and be a big influence in our communities."

What are SWOP weakness you could help strengthen as a board member?

"Strengthen interpersonal communication with our community members is a goal that would change everything from as small as folks caring more about their health and where they live to changing policy with law makers to help strengthen the community."

If you were something you would find at Project Feed the hood Garden what would you be?

"The chickens! Giving is a strength and weakness but if the shirt off my back means another is warm its a gift im happy to give. Chickens are more then they appear and often over looked because of their independence, but counted on in times of needs. So I'd probably be the rooster."

Here is another candidate running for the Board, Jacob Vigil!

Did you find SWOP or did SWOP find you?

"I learned about SWOP through the 500 Years of Chicano/a History book, which I first discovered in high school and which had a tremendous impact on me. Coming to consciousness as a young person in those days, there were not a lot of resources or people to point me to where I could learn more or be active in my beliefs and values. Many years later when I moved back to Albuquerque from out of state, I knew i wanted to get connected to SWOP again, and this time I was working in advocacy and state politics. My friend Marisol was on staff and she helped me get reconnected and i was able to learn about SWOP's current work in Albuquerque and across the state."

What do you think are SWOP’s strengths?

"One of the best things about SWOP is how faithful and committed it is to its core values, how absolutely driven by the mission and the leadership and needs of the community. This is rare in nonprofits, and for that reasons SWOP is seen as one of "realest" organizations out there, attuned to community and walking the walk of liberation and justice in a truly intersectional and uncompromising way. There is also a strong sense of familia, and the community doesnt just feel like work, but like actual family. This is deeply rooted in New Mexico values and it is one of the things I love most about SWOP. SWOP and its staff and members also have the ability to respond to and elevate the current needs of the community as they shift and change. They can nimbly adapt and follow what is happening on the ground, rather than where the next funding is coming from."

What are SWOP weakness you could help strengthen as a board member?

"As a board member, I would work to enhance and strengthen the organization's fundraising capacity, as well as build new and different connections and relationships. I can also help with adding my own skill set to the work of SWOP, including policy analysis and research and legislative advocacy."

If you were something you would find at Project Feed the hood Garden what would you be?

"I would say that I am beans-- not standing out the most, but working hard near the roots to provide encouragement and resources (nitrogen!) to all the other plants in the garden."

Here are the responses from your next candidate, Janelle Astorga Ramos! Be sure to join the SWOP Member Meeting + Board Elections this Friday at 5PM to hear more!

Did you find SWOP or did SWOP find you?

"I like to say SWOP and I found each other. I was about 15 when I applied for the senior intern position for the SWOP Youth work and I didnt get it, but I was so invested in working for this organization because of all the amazing work I heard that was happening. Then the next summer I applied for YES and got a spot in the program and thats when I was able to truly develop many of the leadership skills I have now."

What do you think are SWOP’s strengths?

"SWOP prides itself in its membership and community work. Our biggest strength is our members and the commitment we all have to our community."

What are SWOP weakness you could help strengthen as a board member?

"I believe there is always work that needs to be done in any organization. Specifically I would like to see more development in connecting all the moving pieces of SWOP to work on a big intersecting campaign."

If you were something you would find at Project Feed the hood Garden what would you be?

"This is a super interesting question but maybe a squash? Because squash can be put in many different dishes and I feel like I adapt really well to the circumstances I am in."

Here's another candidate you should meet! The featured photo is of Ingrid K Ordóñez during our Member Meeting after the last Board Elections! Ingrid is located on the far left.

Did you find SWOP or did SWOP find you?

"SWOP changed my life through the Youth Employment Summer program. When I graduated from high school in 2014, I did not know what I was going to do with my life as I was undocumented and had little to no opportunities for me to get a job or continue with college. When I found out about the YES program I immediately applied, and was hired to work for El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos. I met amazing people through this organization, and through my work with SWOP."

What do you think are SWOP’s strengths?

"SWOP is an organization that allows members, volunteers, staff, board, etc. to learn, grow, and become leaders. SWOP is always working in issues that are relevant to youth and our communities. SWOP empowers people to move, and want to make change."

What are SWOP weakness you could help strengthen as a board member?

"Being on the board these last few years, one of the things I think SWOP needs to improve on is making sure that there’s an equal division in the amount of work or tasks. As I continue to learn more about my role as a board member, I can help with being more involved in specific committees created. I am responsible, and try to follow through with every meeting, and every task that is required of my role."

If you were something you would find at Project Feed the Hood Garden what would you be?

"If I were something you could find at Project Feed the Hood Garden, it would be calabacitas."

Did you find SWOP or did SWOP find you?

"I think it was fate. I was working with the union Communication Workers of America, a temp contracted job, which I loved. We were promoting a townhall, focusing on earned paid sick days for all in NM. I happen to see the ED at the time at the event. We started talking about PARCC testing and the negative impact on students, parents and teachers. We decided to go to schools and start telling parents/ students options about it and how to opt out. There was so much misinformation, being given. We felt it was an opportunity to get facts out to parents and students about it and how to opt out. Then I met Janelle, and we worked a bit on campaign to help everyone have the information they needed to decide what's best for them. I was hooked, after that."

What do you think are SWOP’s strengths?

"SWOP's strength is our gente. Elders and youth, showing our beliefs as New Mexicans. We have so many different beliefs in NM. A lot of the time, lately...I see people focusing on what we don't agree on. SWOP provides a space for us all. SWOP shows how beautiful NM is. We are special, look at our history. We are different, but we also can show others, how to respect each other's beliefs and work together, guide each other, so we all have a chance, not just some. Respect others traditions and religions, and learn from each other. SWOP isn't about focusing on one, but focusing on our community. Learning from our past. Seeing how others learned to live with each other. Teaching to share water, farm and contain for us all to survive, not just one. We focus on our past teachings, not necessarily ourselves."

What are SWOP weakness you could help strengthen as a board member?

"We all can strive to be better and learn. I think we can try and focus on more women in lead. "Honor the keeper of our seeds, our women" (Beva Padilla Sanchez) Would like to on a more matriarchal thought process. I think they're already going that way, but would like to see more from abuela, madre, tia, and Nina's."

If you were something you would find at Project Feed the hood Garden what would you be?

"I would see our youth, our future. Speaking multiple languages, smiles, pride. I see hope, they are reminding us they need us and they are our future. They're cultivating, learning, teaching, creating bonds. Showing us, there is hope. They're growing food, but also they're growing and teaching us to grow. Growing a better world, for us all, love seeing all their ideas and learning from them."

Did you find SWOP or did SWOP find you?

"I was introduced to SWOP a few years ago as the Wilson Garden Committee was starting to form with the goal of supporting the Wilson Middle School Garden. SWOP stepped into provide much needed support to our group. I will always be grateful for being introduced to SWOP it has helped me help my community."

What do you think are SWOP’s strengths?

"SWOP’s strength are community, youth development, and a dedication to equity. Those strengths start with how they respect and empower people, SWOP has created an amazing community. In many organizations, youth are often undervalued and underrepresented. One of the things I think SWOP has worked hard to do is to involve youth in activism and leadership roles. This has ensured that equity is not used simply as a buzzword for the organization, but rather a mission."

What are SWOP weakness you could help strengthen as a board member?

"SWOP has such a great community; each program is full of knowledgeable people and members have vast expertise in their experiences and fields of interest. This leads to SWOP’s only weakness, the information and lived experiences SWOP draws on is scattered. It is hard for our members to access information. As a board member I would like to help by leading an effort to gather our knowledge and make it easily accessible to our community."

If you were something you would find at Project Feed the hood Garden what would you be?

"I would be a pill bug (Rolly Polly) hanging around the garden doing my own thing and helping out all the different plants."

I wish I had known about these events over the last week or so. I could have attended, and publicized them through the Peace Center.
https://www.abqjournal.com/1470049/progressive-group-wants-city-councillor-davis-to-resign.html It amazing how much the Journal story left out of my blog article when I sent the Journal my blog article on Davis. Pat Davis shooting a black man in 2004 as DC cop is only part of the story. As a UNM Campus Cop, Davis engaged in serious pattern of civil rights violations. There are at least two civil lawsuits involving 5 people who sued Davis for false arrest and imprisonment, negligence and civil rights violations. In one case, Davis, along with 20 other police, stormed a home to execute a “sealed search warrant” and caused $20,000 in damages to the home where they found nothing. In the other case, UNM Police Officer Pat Davis along with two other UNM Police officers essentially coerced two woman to allow searches of their homes, located in Corrales, for marijuana and illicit drugs without court approved search warrants. They found nothing after they tossed both homes. One woman, who worked for UNM, was told she would be “ratted out” to UNM officials if she did not cooperate. The citations to the court cases are Aaron Flores, Arturo Flores and Ceclia Flores vs Patrick Davis, et al, “Complaint for Damages For Violation of Civil Rights”, New Mexico Second Judicial Court, CV-2008-03890 and Brook Bender and Joan Hughs vs Board of Regents of the Univerity of New Mexico and Patrick Davis, et al, “Complaint for False Arrest
