Is push for education equity at risk amid COVID-19 economic fallout? - New Mexico In Depth

Say NO to education budget cuts! Youth are the future!

"Indigenous, Multilingual, Multicultural, and Special Education Initiatives would be trimmed from $5.5 million to $2.8 million and what the state would spend on culturally and linguistically diverse instructional material and curriculum development would drop by $8 million. The plan also proposes canceling out $4.2 million for mentorship stipends."

Protester Shot After Militiamen Raise Tensions At Oñate Monument

We want to be protected from the powers that mean us harm, especially during peaceful protests where mostly youth and people of color are present! This incident is an outrage, and shows us even further why racist institutions and groups including corrupt police systems must be eradicated.

Albuquerque police have arrested the man who shot a protestor last night at a demonstration against a statue of Juan de Oñate in Albuquerque’s Old Town.

Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice

Dear Friends of Peace and Justice:

The Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice has designated wall space to be devoted to a mural commemorating George Floyd and other victims of murder at the hands of the police. This 40 ft wall will honor their memories and serve as a reminder of what we must continue to stand against and the desperate need for changing systemic racism. An invitation to artists will be issued this week followed by a selection of the winning submission by end of June. Our goal is to have the mural completed by the beginning of August.

We Need Your Help!

Your donations will allow us the funds necessary to award the winning muralist and to also assist the winner with purchasing supplies. You can contribute to the ACP&J Mural Fund by mailing your donations to the Peace and Justice Center (202 Harvard Drive SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106) or visit our website/paypal: https//abqabqpeaceandjustice.org/index.php/donate.

Please help us make this tribute a reality.

Unexpected Wage Loss Started As Self Quarantine organized by Nkazi Sinandile

From Nkazi:

"I am overwhelmed with the generosity of those who have supported me, and therefore my family, here and in South Africa.
I visited one of my doctors yesterday and have since been referred to three specialty clinics. Two of the appointments are in August, which means I will not be able to return for a while to work. I lose $500.00 plus per shift x 3 days a week every time I am away. This has been since April 25th of this year.
If I was not still on probation/orientation I would get paid, but no pay, hence the need to continue this fundraiser. Not getting social security or unemployment doesn't help either.
Thank You. Your kind sharing or donating is invaluable. Every bit helps!

Nkazi has done so much for SWOP and our efforts to get masks out to our people. She has worked tirelessly to help sew and coordinate sewing between her group New Mexico Women's Global Pathways, several youth, and others. We appreciate you Nkazi, and we stand by you in this challenge!

Land Use, Planning, and Zoning Committee Meeting Public Comment Sign Up: June 10, 2020

TOMORROW: We need your help supporting a cumulative impact agreement to Albuquerque's integrated development ordinance (IDO) during the next ABQ Planning and Zoning Meeting!

Cumulative impacts evaluate the environmental and community health impacts that result from the incremental effects of industrial and certain commercial developments when considered in conjunction with other past and present development. With your support, we can ask our city counselors to keep polluting and other harmful industries out of our most impacted neighborhoods like San Jose.

To voice your support of this impact agreement during the next Planning and Zoning meeting, please submit your information in the link below and choose agenda item 'f. O-20-10 Adopting Text Amendments To The Integrated Development Ordinance §14-16 For The Annual Update In 2019 (Benton, Jones)'

You can sign up to speak, or send in a written comment by 2pm TOMORROW, June 10th. The meeting will be held over Zoom and can be viewed live on Youtube.

Use this form to sign up to provide public comments for the June 10, 2020 Land Use, Planning, and Zoning Committee Meeting.

Contacto/Email any major corrections or updates to [email protected] (Perdón por la mala traducción al español) Distribution has changed at many sites due to Covid restrictions. Sources range from government services, churches and various organizations, with and without political or faith affiliations. Requirements for picking up food range from nothing (YAY!), to some form of ID, to proof of income and residence, to listening to some preaching first to various paperwork. Side note: food should always be free, a human right that everyone deserves, not a product to be bought and sold and profited from. But we live in an economy of capitalism -- billions experience malnutrition or die of starvation so that a few may grow richer and richer and richer. Cheers to a world free from capitalism, where food is plentiful for all! La distribución ha cambiado en muchos sitios debido a restricciones de Covid.
