About the Artist:

Adelina M. Cruz

I draw my inspiration from my own experiences and the world around me. In both my professional and personal art, I have focused on bringing awareness to certain issues such as addiction, gender identity, queerness, and cultura.

BLESSING OF ACEQUIA WATERS AND FIELDS

[email protected] comadritas, compadritos, friends, family, y todos los que nos rodean. Kalpulli Izkalli invites you to take a moment in a synchronized way, on Friday, May 15, to bless the sacred water that sustains our body temple, altars and agriculture. This weekend we would have traditionally celebrated San Isidro and Santa Maria de la Cabeza at the Annual Blessing of the Acequia Waters and Fields, but because we are unable to gather we still want to connect spiritually with our community and the sacred element of water.

The Blessing of the Acequia Waters and Fields is an old tradition that goes back many generations where the community blesses the waters and acequias that flow to nourish the fields and our families and is still honored in the valley of Atrisco.

San Isidro is the patron saint of farmers, farmworkers and day laborers everywhere and is known for his goodness toward the poor and animals. His wife, Santa Maria de la Cabeza (Maria Torribia her original name), also a saint, was known for her curing and medicinal healing powers. In her honor, almost 20 years ago Kalpulli Izkalli’s Promotoras Tradicionales were asked to bless the flowers that are used as an ofrenda to the waters and since have received the community’s blessing for their healing work.

This year's celebration was intended to honor Elder and Hermano Penitente Jose Maria Perea, who for many years led the procession along the Acequias in prayer and song with his beautiful voice. Jose Maria’s Spiritual connection to the land and water was his inspiration for his wholehearted commitment to the preservation of not only the land and water, but the tradition and culture that he exemplified. And for this the community is most infinitely grateful and will honor him more formerly and appropriately in the near future.

The Elders have invited Community members, vecinos/neighbors, and the public “to remember that ‘we are priest, prophets, and kings’ and we can bless the water ourselves!” And in remembrance of this time honored tradition the Elder Lita Pino asks us, “if you can, take a drive or walk to an acequia and offer your rose petals, and pray for rain, good crops, safety along the ditches, community well-being, and healing for all. Also keep in mind and heart that we all benefit from the labor of farmers, who provide us with food. So Isidore and Maria can remind us to be grateful and supportive of those who put food on our tables."

During this time of year the ancients also honored Chalchiuhtlicue, la Gran Senora de la Aguas, or the great goddess of the waters. Midwives prayed to her when washing newborns, cleansing the child's heart to prepare it for the sometimes difficult world ahead. Chalchiuhtlicue was also invoked to bless the water used for agriculture, similar to the San Isidro and Santa Maria de la Cabeza tradition here in the South Valley.

So please join us, in your own ceremonial way with your family or by yourself to bless the water that you use in the garden, especially to those that have planted Maiz, please continue that special relationship with Teocentli.

Optional suggestions include:

- Take a bath with herbs from your garden and offer some of that water back to the earth.

- Remember that crying helps release pain and "hay que fluir", in these uncertain times we need to learn how to ride it out safely. We cannot stagnate in what didn't work out for us or what didn't meet our expectations, so please be kind and forgiving to yourself.

- You may connect with the water on your altar, connecting with the waters of a nearby acequia or arroyo, you can offer flowers or seeds, or a canto.

Below is a link to a beautiful song, “Sing the Water Song”, about passing the tradition of honoring the sacred water. The lyrics are included at the end of the song so you can follow along.

https://youtu.be/KC2FHciQ0sU

Wherever you choose, in your garden, by an acequia or arroyo, in the presence of your own altar/Tlamanalli or any sacred space to connect simultaneously and spiritually in Ceremonia, we pray for the water of our planet to cleanse and heal for those that will inherit it. Recordando that “As we heal ourselves we heal our Mother Earth”. Ometeotl!

Today at the 3rd Annual Bosque Planting Day. We held a beautiful opening ceremony with comadres and community. Thank comadres for holding such beautiful sacred space and for your offrendas. We are so grateful for each and every person who held space in the prayer circle, for sending blessings to every tree that was planted today, every person who volunteered/worked, and every hand that put each tree in the ground. We are all connected thru this work. We are all connected to each other, thru Madre Tierra. Thank you for honoring her in this very important work.

I have a question. I know I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to ancient Mexica philosophy, but today a good friend of mine who I respect called me out on a picture I shared. it was Xipe Totec. I did it to represent the sacrifices we are making now in the spring. my friend is a Chicana civil rights attorney and she is having a hard time reconciling the murderous bloodlust of our ancestors. I've had these questions as well. is it right to pick and choose aspects of our ancestry that doesn't disturb our twenty first century sensibilities?
Happening this weekend! Hope you'll join us! Please RSVP as space is limited.

Transgender Day of Remembrance 2017 at UNM LGBTQ Resource Center. Beautiful ceremony and cleansing of their new space. Candlelight vigil at the Duck Pond followed. Each luminaria represents a Two-Spirit who was taken too soon.So many suffer just for who they are, many lose their lives for who they love. We need to treat our two-spirited brothers and sisters with love and dignity, for they too are divine.
