Prairie Dog Pals

The Prairie Dog Pals fall garage sale will be held on the 20 and 21 of October 2023 from 8:00AM-3:00PM at 917 Morris Street NE (just north of Lomas). Plan to come by, socialize, and shop! More importantly scour your inventory of fine collectibles and donate any unneeded treasures for the garage sale (please price your items). If you want to volunteer with the set up or sale, please coordinate with R. Watt (505 237 0347) or Debbie Stevenson (505 205 7966). Please tell your friends to come by and spend money. The money will go towards prairie dog preservation. The donations are tax deductible (to the extent allowed by law) and we will gladly provide you with a certificate stating such. If you have donations for the sale contact Ray or Debbie to arrange a mutually convenient drop off date/time. Finally, after the sale, you can either pick up your unsold items at 3:00 on Saturday, or they will be donated to an animal charity/non profit group.

Dear Animal Lovers in the ABQ area! From ABQ Animal Welfare

Due to the nature of our work, we hardly have any direct services volunteer opportunities but here is one that just came up!
The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Dept. (AWD) is hosting a spay/neuter clinic 7/7 – 7/9, held at the CABQ Fire Academy at 11500 Sunset Gardens Rd SW. Right now, they have over 1200 families seeking free spay/neuter services through the City of Albuquerque Lottery Program. This program is to help unwanted litters in Albuquerque that fill up our shelters yearly. Our Goal is to Spay/Neuter up to 65 dogs/cats per day.
They are in dire need of volunteers. Please see the attached spreadsheet and links in the email below for volunteer position descriptions and openings.
At least 3 APNM staff members plan to volunteer on Friday and Saturday.
To sign up for a shift or shifts, please email Valerie Greif, AWD Community Engagement Coordinator, at [email protected], with the volunteer position(s) you’re interested in, date, time, and email address in case she needs to send you instructions.
The out-of-state provider Animal Balance will perform the surgeries. This will be the first time CABQ AWD has worked with Animal Balance.

Please use the links below to view the descriptions for each position and sign up. Each position is broken down into time slots for each of the three days. If you are able to help in a position for longer than the one time slot, please sign up for the multiple time slots that you can fill. Lunch and drinks will be provided for all three days. Please plan accordingly if you have specific diet restrictions. This event will be both indoor and outdoor so please plan to wear appropriate clothing and bring sun protection.
They will also be needing many bed sheets to be able to cover the pet kennels to keep pets calm. If you have sheets to donate to this, you can drop them off at the east or west volunteer areas prior to the event days.

Hi Animal Advocates

I wondered if someone you know is thinking about getting an indoor-only kitty. I wrote the following email to our volunteers to give this little guy some extra exposure.

I am writing to my animal-loving friends to let you know about a special kitten. He is being adopted through another animal group (PACA), but is so special, I wanted everyone to know about him in case you know of a loving pet parent who would like to adopt him. He is extra sweet and loving. While walking around, he will look up at you sweetly. He would love to interact with his own human. He was born with a partially cloudy cornea in his left eye, so potential adopters have been passing him up. But, he is the best! He is looking for a loving, safe, indoor home.

So, if you know of a safe, indoor home for him, please check him out. He is being shown at the PetSmart at Academy and Wyoming.

Hi Friends,

Claire has lost her human mom, who passed recently. Claire is a declawed 15 year old kitty. The family friend taking care of her, at this time, said she is very sweet, and loves to be petted and scratched under the chin. She also likes laps (on her terms, of course😻) She has been a comfort and good companion to her human, and is now in need of a new human to love and be loved by.

As we enter the fourth week of the New Mexico legislative session, things are definitely in full gear!

Last week, bills that received their first hearing in committee included:

House Bill 184 (State Game Commission Changes) changes the appointment process and membership qualifications of the State Game Commission, the Governor-appointed body that creates regulations regarding wildlife management.

Senate Bill 72 (Create Wildlife Corridors Fund) creates a new fund managed by the NM Department of Transportation and appropriates $50 million for wildlife studies, construction, and management of safe road crossings for wildlife.

Senate Bill 18 (Rename Family Violence Protection Act) aims to overhaul the state law regarding domestic abuse protective orders. The bill includes key provisions to protect animals in domestic violence cases.

Senate Bill 134 (No Exotic Animals in Traveling Performances) seeks to prohibit traveling circuses that use exotic animals in their acts from coming to New Mexico.

Additionally, while we wait for Senate Bill 215 (Establish Crime of Be******ty) to be scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Health & Public Affairs Committee, here are some other priority bills that were introduced in the past week:

Senate Bill 271 (Equine Definition) is a bill that not only updates language in state law by defining “equine”—instead of “horses and asses”—but also codifies in state law a process where the abused and abandoned equines that end up either in the custody of the Livestock Board or law enforcement or seized after a cruelty conviction are first offered to the state’s registered equine rescues.

Senate Bill 291 (CYFD Domestic Violence Victims & Animals) appropriates $350,000 in funding for the next fiscal year to the Children, Youth & Families Department to support program work for domestic violence victims and their animals. This type of funding has for years helped fuel the CARE Program, which provides assistance for emergency veterinary care and temporary safe boarding of companion animals for people escaping domestic violence.

Senate Bill 301 (Free-Roaming Horses) amends current state law to strengthen protections and humane management processes for New Mexico’s free-roaming horses.

A major victory for the Alamogordo chimps! On Tuesday, a federal court ruled that NIH (the National Institutes of Health) is legally required to retire the APF chimpanzees to sanctuary. The decision was issued in a lawsuit brought by the Humane Society of the United States, Animal Protection New Mexico, Humane Society Legislative Fund, and three individual plaintiffs.
“Thirty chimp survivors are waiting in Alamogordo, New Mexico for the sanctuary they’ve been promised by our federal government. This decision affirms what we’ve asserted all along: by law, these chimpanzees have the right to live their best chimp lives in sanctuary,” said Leslie Rudloff, Esq., chief program and policy officer, Animal Protection New Mexico.
The order noted that NIH had violated the law because “the plain and unambiguous language of the CHIMP Act mandates the transfer of all [Alamogordo] chimpanzees to Chimp Haven.”
Further proceedings will follow to determine how NIH must proceed in light of the court’s ruling.
We will not give up until all the chimps at Alamogordo reach the sanctuary that they deserve!

Animal Advocates will be collecting blankets, toys and treats for Operation Silent Night on Sundays , Dec 4th, 11th and 18th, at First Unitarian Church, 8:30-noon.

Celebrate the season of giving by helping the Animal Welfare Department increase the comfort of homeless animals in City shelters. The wish list for cats and dogs include small cat toys, treats, beds, brushes, wand toys, scratchers, blankets, towels, dog enrichment toys, collars, harnesses, pill pockets, and Kong’s toys. Please help them by fulfilling their wish list as they spend their holidays at Animal Welfare shelters while waiting to find forever homes.

Donations will be accepted through December 31. Members of the public can drop off their donations at the Animal Welfare Department shelters and at participating small businesses throughout the city. For a listing of drop-off locations, go to www.cabq.gov/pets.
