Burrowing Caterpillar
We got footage in the park of this White-Lined Sphinx Caterpillar burrowing in the sand and preparing a home for the winter to become a pupa; when it eventually emerges it will become a moth. This little critter is going to be a star! No autographs, please.
Petroglyph is more than just a park. It is a place of solitude, a place of discovery and imagination, and a place of togetherness. Here is a look at all of the different adventures and educational experiences that can happen on any given day. Come out and experience the park for yourself!
To help celebrate Ansel Adam's Birthday month (he would have been 116 years old on Feb. 20th) and all the beautiful photographs he took in national parks, Parks in Focus helped show us how to capture the beauty of nature, even on a gloomy day. Photos captured by ranger Allison.
In the words of Ansel Adams, "You don't take a photograph, you make it."

This time of year is a good time of year for reflection. Today we are reflecting on all our memories we have created in 2017. In the last year, we have celebrated many of our employees and volunteers for their accomplishments, awards, and time in service over the years. We have listened to alluring music in the ampitheater. We have watched a child's face light up when he got a chance to touch a real live wolf on Junior Ranger Day. We were part of one of the most important days of 15 people's lives as they walked down the row to receive their United States Citizenship. We listened to one of the most beautiful stories told in history as Judith Avila talked with us about the life and memories of one of the original Code Talkers during World War II. We have been part of one of the most significant events in National Park Service history as we turned 100 years old in August of 2016. We hope everyone has had as much fun as we have! Please help us in welcoming 2018 as we ponder our future memories, experiences and significant events with all of YOU. Thank You and Happy Holidays to Everyone!
Good Morning from the visitor center!
Did you know that there are over 220,000 people in the United States that volunteer their time in a national park? We are so very grateful for our volunteers and all the help and contributions they have done for our park. Some of our volunteers walk the trails, some of them help out at the visitor center, some of them help out with various projects around the park and some of them do all of the above! There are not enough "thank yous" to go around, but we are so lucky to have you as part of OUR team! #InternationalVolunteerDay #VIP

In recognition to all veterans, today we would like to honor all military veterans for their service to the United States Armed Forces. We would also like to individually thank our own veterans: John Mitchell, Felipe Montiel, Andrew Bustos, Richard Guerra, Christina Ryan-Miller, Ed Dunn, Lorenzo Lucero and Jennifer Northup. #ThankYou #VeteransDay
Visiting the Volcanoes
Even though Petroglyph National Monument is known for having over 20,000 petroglyph images, the geologic formation of this land is unlike any other in the world. Located in the center of a large rift valley, the volcanoes tell their own story. Take a walk around the three cinder cones, dating back over 180,000 years and see this amazing landscape. During the late spring and early summer months, flowers such as the orange globemallows and purple asters as shown in the video are blooming all over. If you look closely, you may even spot a horned toad lizard or a large collared lizard posing on an ancient basalt boulder. The sights are endless and the memories are forever. “In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks.”- John Muir

Winter Weather Alert! The high today is only 45 degrees. The entrance to the visitor center is very slippery with the wintry mix of snow and rain. Please use caution if you plan on visiting the park today. This clip was taken right outside the visitor center entrance looking at the horno.
No #AprilFools joke today! It really is raining in the desert! Use caution when making your way up to the visitor center entrance, as well as the petroglyph viewing trails. It is expected to rain on and off all day.
Beautiful morning at the visitor center! Highs are expected to reach 80 by the weekend.
Ranger Larry at Cliff Base Trail, Boca Negra Canyon
Our most visited place in the monument is Boca Negra Canyon. In an hour, visitors can view over 100 petroglyphs. Ranger Larry gives a little introduction to the history of the petroglyphs at Cliff Base Trail.
Happy 100th Birthday to the National Park Service from all of us at Petroglyph National Monument
