Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July to honor the history, achievements, and lived experiences of the disabled community while advocating for a fully inclusive world.
Society has made great progress towards inclusivity and equality, but there is still a long way to go.
Did you know that people with disabilities still face marriage inequality? Many people with disabilities rely on government assistance programs like SSI, Medicaid, housing vouchers, etc. which are awarded based on income. For many individuals, marrying their partner would place them above the qualifying income level, and they would be left without services that they rely on to live.
On Valentine’s Day of 2025, California Representative Jimmy Panetta [D-CA-19] reintroduced the Marriage Equality for Disabled Adults Act (H.R. 1389). This critical legislation would eliminate outdated laws that force Disabled Adult Children (DACs) to choose between their right to marry and their access to essential Social Security and Medicaid benefits. Rep. Zoe Lofgren [D-CA-18] co-leads this legislation.

The fight for greater access and inclusivity in society continues. We must continue to support and uplift each other, amplify experiences and voices from the disabled community, and never stop advocating for equality and access.
