Did you know, Alex P. Haley was the first journalist of the Coast Guard and is the author of the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for fiction winning book, Roots: The Saga of an American Family? Haley enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1939 as a steward, assisting cooks. Steward was the only rank in which most African Americans could enter the Coast Guard at the time Haley enlisted. During his years of service, Haley developed and honed the writing skills that made him the first Coast Guard journalist. Haley transferred to the journalist rate in 1949 and was the first Coast Guardsman to attain the rank of Chief Petty Officer in that rate when the Coast Guard promoted him in 1950. Today, on the 80th anniversary of the attack on , the 2,403 service members who were killed, and the 1,178 people who were injured.

Thank you to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and defend our country.

The last surviving ship that was present at Pearl Harbor naval base that day is USCG Cutter 37 (commissioned in 1936 as USCGC Taney), and is now a National Historic Landmark anchored in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Happy ! 🐟🐠

World Fisheries Day is a day where we recognize and appreciate the integral role fisheries play in our society. Protecting fisheries at home and abroad is a major part of the Coast Guard's living marine resource mission, and one we engage in daily.

Families Invited to Get “Hands On” Look at Military and First-Responder Equipment
on 2018 Military & First Responders Day

Saturday, May 19 (10am-2pm)
Albuquerque/Cottonwood Mall (10000 Coors Bypass NW)

(ALBUQUERQUE, NM) – Military service branches, along with federal, state, and local first-responder agencies, will have equipment on display for2018 Military & First Responders Day on May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cottonwood Mall in Albuquerque, located at 10000 Coors Bypass NW in the city’s west side.
Dozens of military and first-responder vehicles, helicopters, boats, and other equipment will be available to climb aboard for a “hands on” look. Uniformed service members, law enforcement and first-responder personnel will also be there to meet and greet attendees.

This free family-friendly event is presented by the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (DVS) and the Cottonwood Mall to provide an opportunity for the public to meet military and first-responder personnel--and learn how they serve and protect the citizens of New Mexico.

Additionally, “bounce houses,” food trucks, vendors, and many more activities and displays will also be on-site to add to the fun and enjoyment for the whole family.

For more information, contact DVS Outreach Coordinator Joseph Dorn at [email protected] or (505) 383-2414.
