Repost from @juniorleague

By the 1970s, the second wave of the feminist movement was in full swing. More and more women entered the workplace, Congress approved the Equal Rights Amendment, and the Supreme Court legalized abortion in their Roe v. Wade decision. Spousal abuse was just beginning to be identified as a major social problem in the 1970s when the Junior League of Bronxville began working with their county probation department to develop court assistance programs for abused spouses. Their work was a catalyst for the League’s broader role in advocating for the enactment of the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act, the only federal funding source dedicated directly to domestic violence shelters and programs, in 1984.

We honor the women who came before us and paved the way for the work we do today.
